Joel Caleb to Virginia Tech: Hokies Land 4-Star Athlete Prospect

Nicholas GossFeb 1, 2012

Joel Caleb, a talented 4-star athlete prospect, signed with Virginia Tech on national signing day according to Dallas Jackson of Yahoo! Sports.

Caleb was considered the best football prospect in Virginia when the football season began last fall, and is a versatile player who can play multiple positions at the collegiate level.

The Clover Hill High School star threw for 747 yards this season and also rushed for an impressive 737 yards. Despite his success through the air and on the ground, the position Caleb is best suited for in college is wide receiver. His quickness and strength makes him tough to tackle, and his 201 lbs. frame makes him bigger than most wideouts.

When you combine his strength with his 6'2" height, you begin to understand how explosive Caleb could be as a wide receiver in college.

Caleb was one of the focal points of the spread offense that his Clover Hill team played with, and his good arm strength makes him a potential quarterback at college.

Before choosing Virginia Tech on national signing day, Caleb was considering Ohio State and West Virginia, among others, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Frank Beamer should be very excited that Caleb has chosen to join his program, and there's no reason to believe the talented athlete won't play very well as a freshman in college.

Caleb is an interesting fit for the Hokies. He has the talent to be one of the best receivers in college football, but Beamer likes to run an offense predicated on the run. That would seem to limit Caleb's potential impact, since he can't touch the ball if it's not getting thrown to him.

Still, it is hard not to be enamored with Caleb's raw potential and what he can do for this offense. It will take him some time to adjust to the speed and physical nature of the college game, but he should be good for 40-45 catches, 550-600 yards and a handful of touchdowns in his freshman year.
