College Football Recruiting Rankings 2012: Classes Sure to Make Immediate Impact
When it comes to college football, major contributions from freshmen are usually few and far between. Every team has at least a couple newcomers who carve out a nice niche for themselves, but just because a player is highly touted doesn't mean they will dominate from day one.
With that said, there appear to be a few recruiting classes that are a cut above the rest right now. While that may not hold up over the next year or two, there seem to be some very defined winners in the recruiting process.
Here are three teams whose classes are sure to make an immediate impact.
Georgia
Key Recruits (Ranking according to ESPNU 150): RB Keith Marshall (No. 5), LB Josh Harvey-Clemons (No. 17), OT John Theus (No. 28), DT Jonathan Taylor (No. 53), DE Jordan Jenkins (No. 67)
Not surprisingly, the Georgia Bulldogs put together one of the most impressive recruiting classes in college football. Running back Keith Marshall, linebacker Josh Harvey-Clemons and offensive tackle John Theus all figure to be players who can step in and contribute right away.
I think that is especially true of Harvey-Clemons.
ESPNU's No. 1 outside linebacker committed to Georgia on national signing day, opting to stay in his home state. Harvey-Clemons i just 210 lbs., but at 6'4" he has room to fill out. Speedy linebackers who can go from sideline to sideline are really en vogue at the collegiate level currently.
It wouldn't surprise me if Harvey-Clemons is the top freshman in the SEC in 2012.
Florida State
Key Recruits (Ranking according to ESPNU 150): DE Mario Edwards (No. 1), QB Jameis Winston (No. 14), DE Chris Casher (No. 23), DE Dante Fowler Jr. (No. 71), RB Mario Pender (No. 72), WR Marvin Bracy (No. 76)
Not only did the Florida State Seminoles nab the No. 1 overall recruit according to ESPNU in defensive end Mario Edwards, but they have a stacked class that should help on both sides of the ball. While the offensive players they signed are more likely to have an impact in their second season, the defense was really bolstered.
As the top recruit Edwards will be expected to make plays from day one, and with his 6'4", 297-lb. frame, I don't think that will be an issue. On top of that, Chris Casher and Dante Fowler Jr. should be able to help the pass rush as well.
If something happens to quarterback E.J. Manuel, then Jameis Winston could play right away, but he is more likely to start his sophomore season.
Alabama
Key Recruits (Ranking according to ESPNU 150): S Landon Collins (No. 6), ATH Eddie Williams (No. 11), ATH Cyrus Jones (No. 20), WR Chris Black (No.22), OT Brandon Greene (No. 30), CB Geno Smith (No. 31), WR Amari Cooper (No. 49), RB T.J. Yeldon (No. 55), LB Dillon Lee (No. 59), LB Ryan Anderson (No. 93)
Based on the sheer depth of their recruiting class, the Alabama Crimson Tide is bound to have some freshman contributors. The Tide are getting offensive and defensive help as they attempt to reload with many players entering the NFL.
Because Alabama is losing so many key players, there is a high probability that it will use younger players more than usual.
Both Eddie Williams and Chris Black should be impact players at wide receiver from the onset. Quarterback A.J. McCarron was lacking in terms of weapons last year, so he will be happy to see them. Defensively, safety Landon Collins has all the tools to lead the Tide secondary for years to come.
Not all of their recruits will play immediately, but it's fair to say that several will help right away.
