English Premier League: 10 Biggest Deals in January Transfer Window

Charlie MelmanFeb 1, 2012

It was a hectic final day of the transfer window, and Premier League teams were extremely heavily involved in the festivities.

All around the world's best league, teams were hectically getting deals done in the final moments of the transfer window, and the moves that were made will surely define the rest of what will be a thrilling campaign.

All of the top Premier League clubs made moves of some sort as they looked to reinforce their squads for a final push for the title or a Champions League spot.

After a crazy final few hours, let us recap the result of all the Transfer Deadline Day festivities.

Bobby Zamora to QPR

1 of 10

QPR got a bargain when they signed Fulham striker Bobby Zamora for a cheap £6 million, and the Englishman will now be a vital cog in Mark Hughes' attack.

The deal, which can rise to £7 million with add-ons, gives the Rangers a consistent, productive striker with years of Premier League experience and European experience.

His proven quality and familiarity with ex-Fulham boss Mark Hughes should prevent any rift between player and manager, and Zamora looks to be a good bit of business for the ambitious London side.

Papiss Cisse to Newcastle

2 of 10

In a move to fortify their attack and provide support to the fantastic Demba Ba up top, Newcastle moved to sign Papiss Cisse from SC Freiburg.

The Senegalese striker is entering the prime of his career, at 26 years old, and he will provide the Magpies with a consistent, reliable option up front.

Cisse has scored wherever he has played and his powerful, tall frame will be successful in dealing with the physical, demanding nature of the Premier League.

Roman Pavlyuchenko to Lokomotiv Moscow

3 of 10

Pavlyuchenko had fallen out of favor for for some time, following his high-profile transfer in 2008, and his move back to Russia was not much of a surprise.

While the Russian had a fairly good goal-scoring record in his time at Spurs, bagging 42 goals in 113 appearances, he never established himself as the dominant striker that he threatened to be.

So, Pavlyuchenko heads back to his home country with much less fanfare than he left it with, and for a relatively small £8 million at that.

Kevin De Bruyne to Chelsea

4 of 10

Having already purchased highly-touted goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois from Racing Genk during the summer, Chelsea strengthened their link to the Belgian club by purchasing much-hyped youngster Kevin De Bruyne on Deadline Day.

The pacey 20-year-old winger has tons of potential, and has been tearing up the Belgian domestic league with his club since he was 17.

De Bruyne's transfer is another example of the slow and painful youth transition currently taking place at Stamford Bridge, and he will look to knock the likes of Florent Malouda out of the team.

Wayne Bridge to Sunderland

5 of 10

For a man who has only played once in the Carling Cup since September, Bridge generated a great deal of speculation and rumor, particularly surrounding a potential move to Arsenal.

However, it was Sunderland who snapped up the 31-year-old England left-back on loan until the end of the year, fortifying their back line by bringing in the experienced defender.

Bridge says that he is happy to get a few games for Sunderland instead of watching Manchester City's game from his comfy seat in the Etihad Stadium.

And Sunderland will be happy to only be picking up £20,000 of Bridge's incredible £90,000 per week salary that he has been earning at City.

Nedum Onuoha to QPR

6 of 10

One of what will surely be many young casualties to Manchester City's ruthless system of player turnover, Onuoha displayed real potential for City but will now have to ply his trade for a growing core of quality players at QPR.

If the Rangers can wring the potential out of him that he seldom had the opportunity to display in Manchester behind Joleon Lescott and Vincent Kompany, his £3 million transfer fee will be a bargain for the Hoops.

If he can forge a successful partnership with Anton Ferdinand in central defence, QPR will have both a sturdy and technically proficient back line.

David Pizzaro to Manchester City

7 of 10

In a bid to add depth and experience to their midfield, Manchester City brought in experienced Roma and Chile midfielder David Pizarro on loan until the end of the season.

The diminutive Pizarro will add considerable versatility and stability to City's midfield until the end of the season, and is a more consistently reliable option than Owen Hargreaves in the middle of the pitch.

Though City certainly did not need to take the cheapest option, Pizarro certainly seems to be an astute bit of business.

Thomas Eisfeld to Arsenal

8 of 10

While Eisfeld's transfer might not have been the highest profile move of the transfer window, the very fact that Arsenal made a permanent transfer at all is surprising.

One can draw numerous comparisons with the aging Tomas Rosicky, as both occupy the same attacking midfield position and both arrived at Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund.

Though unproven at Dortmund, Arsene Wenger seems to think very highly of the youngster, stating:

"

He is young but has proven to us that he can play, that he has the attitude and technical ability to be a valuable addition to our squad. We’re very pleased to welcome him to the Club and look forward to his contribution in the coming seasons.

"

Ravel Morrison to West Ham United

9 of 10

There was a considerable amount of hype throughout January surrounding the imminent transfer of Ravel Morrison out of Manchester United, and the troubled midfielder finally moved to West Ham on Deadline Day.

There is no denying the considerable talent of the prospect, but his frequent off-pitch issues have not endeared himself to manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and Morrison has left Old Trafford before ever making a league appearance there.

If West Ham can resolve the player's personal issues, Morrison will turn out to be a very astute purchase, but it is clear that Fergie did not see him as a part of his long-term plans.

Louis Saha to Tottenham

10 of 10

To replace the departing Roman Pavlyuchenko, Harry Redknapp elected to bring in seasoned Everton striker Louis Saha to add depth to his core of forwards.

Even at 33, Saha is still a legitimate striking threat for Everton, but only when he is healthy. And in his career, the Frenchman has been blighted by injuries, with no sign of the trend slowing.

His transfer was helped along by Steven Pienaar's return to Everton on loan, but if Saha cannot stay healthy for an extended period of time, Spurs fans might come to regret this move as a flop.

However, at his age and for the small fee he commanded, Tottenham have not taken a very large risk on Saha.
