Alistair Overeem Charged with Misdemeanor Battery After Alleged Attack on Woman
UFC fighter Alistair Overeem was charged with a misdemeanor battery earlier this month for allegedly attacking a woman in a Las Vegas hotel, according to TMZ.
The report states that Overeem was not arrested; instead he was given a citation and will appear in court next month.
"Alistair's lawyer, David Chesnoff, released a statement saying, "There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence."
"
If convicted, the fighter faces up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The incident allegedly took place a few days after Overeem defeated Brock Lesnar, at UFC 141, on December 30.
UFC has not issued a statement on the allegations, and most likely will not until all the facts are collected, and the legal process has done its job.
According to Franklin McNeil of ESPN, Overeem is dealing with multiple legal issues right now. In addition to the alleged attack in Vegas, he is also being sued by his former management team for failing to pay commission.
Overeem is currently the No. 1 contender for the heavyweight championship, a position he earned after defeating Lesnar. He is going to take on Junior dos Santos at some point, though a date for that fight has not yet been scheduled.
Until his legal problems are settled, a date for that fight will most likely not be set. McNeil's report says that Overeem is due in court on February 21.
Overeem has had an interesting couple of months, but not in a good way.
In addition to this alleged incident, he missed a drug test before his fight with Lesnar and needed 27 days to get back to the Nevada State Athletic Commission on that, on top of the situation involving his former management team.
