Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Will Deontay Greenberry End Up with the Irish?
Highly touted 4-star receiver recruit Deontay Greenberry is one of Notre Dame’s top overall targets for the 2012 recruiting class.
Many Irish fans have believed that Greenberry, who has been committed to the Irish since last spring, has seemingly been a guarantee to end up in South Bend, as he's never shown any signs of having serious interest in other schools during the recruiting process, even though he did pay a few visits to USC and Arizona State.
But the California native did raise some eyebrows this past weekend when he took his last official visit to Houston.
While down there, Greenberry met with new Houston receivers coach Jamie Christian. The former Arizona State assistant recruited Greenberry during his time with the Sun Devils, and he even got him to take an official visit to Tempe back in October.
The question is, what does this last-minute visit actually mean?
Should Irish fans plan to have their hearts broken on National Signing Day, or was Greenberry’s visit to Houston a mere gesture of appreciation to Christian?
Irish fans have already had to endure one tough de-commitment when 4-star cornerback prospect Ronald Darby reneged on his pledge to Notre Dame and opened his recruitment back up earlier this month.
We’ll find out tomorrow if Greenberry will do the same, but given that the 6’3’’, 185-pound high school senior has remained so solid on his commitment to coach Brian Kelly and the Irish for so many months, it’s hard to see him all of a sudden switching courses so late in the process.
Greenberry has to be enticed by the idea of playing with QB Gunner Kiel in Kelly’s spread offense for the next few years, and he has to be excited about playing on the same team with his cousin, CB Tee Shepard, who is already enrolled in school in South Bend.
There are bound to be a few surprising announcements tomorrow, but if Greenberry puts on a hat other than Notre Dame's, it will definitely be one of the biggest shockers of the day.
