Blake Griffin on Kendrick Perkins and the 12 Most Outrageous Dunks of the Year
Last year Blake Griffin had a dunk on Timofey Mozgov that instantly made Mozgov forever synonymous with "humiliation." Last night he duplicated that dunk, only this time he did it over one of the game's elite centers.
Where does that fit in the top 11 dunks of the year? What are the other 10? Here are my personal favorites. You might know of some I missed. Feel free to post links in the comments section if you have suggestions.
For the sake of variety I didn't use anyone more than once.
Russell Westbrook Gets Nasty
1 of 12The speed, the athleticism and the power that make Russell Westbrook worth $80 million are all on display with this dunk. In particular I have to love the reach on this before he stabs it home.
"Nasty" is the right word to use.
Vince Carter Finds the Fountain of Youth
2 of 12Vince Carter shows he still has some hops in him with this dunk over Emeka Okafor.
If you're Okafor, the one thing you can think is, "At least he didn't jump over me."
"Chris Paul, Do You Want the Steak or Do You Want the Lobster?"
3 of 12When Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are running down the court together on the fast break, Chris Paul is forced to answer the question, "Do you want the steak or do you want the lobster?"
It might not be clear who is who, but I don't really think it matters. Lob City was justly lobbed.
Bosh Goes Coast to Coast
4 of 12"Two-and-a-half this!" At least that's what I imagine Chris Bosh is saying as he jams this one home.
He's been playing like a man on a mission to prove that he's not half of anything. Bosh was huge while Dwyane Wade was injured. While LeBron James is justifiably getting the MVP consideration, don't let Bosh's contributions go by the wayside.
Kobe Bryant Reverse Alley-Oop
5 of 12Kobe Bryant doesn't like being called the seventh-best player in the world—he really doesn't.
Here he misses the shot but then gets himself in place for the alley-oop finish when he sees the lane open up.
With the knee surgery he's got the hops he had when he was a younger man, but he has added the wisdom of the aged veteran. Both the athleticism and the basketball IQ were on full display here.
John Wall from 8 Feet Out
6 of 12Before LeBron James came along, this was the worst victimization of John Lucas III. I bet he longs for the good old days. What makes this even more fun is that in addition to getting shamed here, Lucas also got whistled for the foul.
John Wall's athleticism is just off the charts. I think he left from just inside the painted bull there.
Alonzo Gee Puts the Gee! in Gee
7 of 12When you see this you have to say, "GEE!"
First, Udonis Haslem is no shabby defensive player, so dunking on him period is an accomplishment, but the way Gee just seemed to hang in the air and wait for the finish was absolutely awe-inspiring.
Derrick Rose Says, "Don't Tip MY Pass!"
8 of 12Don't defy Derrick Rose by trying to bat his pass; you'll just make him angry! The two-handed tomahawk here is just vengeful!
With all the point guards on this list, it makes you think: Wouldn't an all-point guard version of the dunk contest be awesome?
Gerald Wallace Windmill Jam Against Lakers
9 of 12Gerald Wallace rouses the crowd with the windmill jam to finish in this tight game. I'm not a fan of the showboat dunks when your team is losing, but when you're making a run and it ignites the crowd, it can be a good thing. Certainly that's the case here.
Wallace is an amazing two-way player, and after LeBron James, it's a conversation between him and Luol Deng as the second-best two-way small forward in the NBA.
Tyreke Evans Statue of Liberty Dunk
10 of 12"If you don't like that, you don't like NBA basketball!" Great quote!
You have to love a dunk-contest dunk through traffic. Notice how he starts to spear that thing from the moment he enters the paint, suspends it in the air all the way through and then stabs home the finish.
LeBron James Goes over John Lucas III's Head
11 of 12Somebody needs to do some kind of mashup with this video and this song and just keep replaying the part where James goes over Lucas' head.
It was the sure-fire can't-miss, gotta be dunk of the year—until the next day.
Now granted, Lucas isn't seven feet tall, but to James' credit, this was a cleaner hurdle. His feet actually went over Lucas' head.
Griffin Mozgovs Perkins
12 of 12The best quote for this dunk comes in a tweet from Stacey King:
"In this years NBA Dunk contest Blake should forget about using the Kia and just ask OKC can he borrow Kendrick Perkins?#JustaSuggestion"
