National Signing Day 2012: Urban Meyer and Nation's Best Recruiters

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

The minute two-time National Championship-winning coach Urban Meyer agreed to coach at Ohio State the entire country braced itself for change across the recruiting landscape.

The former Florida Gator is a wizard on the field and in the living room and is one of the best recruiters in the country.

He's been "flipping recruits" at an alarming rate and come tomorrow could see his Buckeyes land a top three recruiting class despite a reduction in scholarships and a one-year bowl ban.

I dare you to name another coach that could turn that into a positive selling point. It's not that easy, I know.

Meyer's Buckeyes will be ineligible to compete for the BCS Championship next season, but don't be shocked when 2013 rolls around and Meyer has the program on the brink of a title. He's simply that good at bringing in talent.

Here are a few other coaches with elite recruiting chops.

Mack Brown, Texas

The long-time Longhorn has turned in one losing season during his tenure in Austin. Outside of the last two years, Brown was a regular in the double-digit wins column. From 2001-2009, his program turned out nine straight 10-win seasons.

The last two years combined Brown has won only 13 games, the same amount his 2009 BCS runner-up team won in a single season.

But that hasn't stopped him from dominating on the recruiting trail. In fact, his 2012 class has gotten even stronger of late.

ESPN and Rivals have the Longhorns class ranked second while Scout puts them at No.1.

That's not easily achieved the way Texas has played football this past two seasons, but with Brown on campus it hardly matters.

Nick Saban, Alabama

The reigning National Champions are always going to be in the hunt for the SEC and BCS title with Saban pulling recruits.

He's won three national championships in his last seven years of coaching and should receive a slight bit of credit for Les Miles' title win in 2007. Miles was in his third year at LSU, but the Tigers were led by two seniors, quarterback Matt Flynn and defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, and few other holdovers from the Saban era.

When he returned to the college game after a brief stint in the NFL, he promptly turned around an Alabama program that hadn't won the SEC since 1999.

That isn't done without elite recruiting ability. He has a consensus top-two class on tap this year as well.

Jimbo Fisher, Florida State

The Seminoles coach learned his trade while serving on Saban's LSU staff in the early-to-mid 2000's. When Saban landed in Tuscaloosa after the Miami Dolphins failure, Fisher turned down an opportunity to join the staff in favor of Florida State and a head coach in-waiting gig behind Bobby Bowden.

In his two seasons as the head man, he's compiled a 19-8 record on the field and is in the process of landing his second straight top three recruiting class by ESPN's rankings.

His run has been short thus far, but knowing who Fisher worked with prior to taking over it is no question that recruiting is one of top talents.

The 'Noles are still putting it together on the field, but they'll have the talent to make more and more noise as the Fisher's tenure goes on.

When the dust settles on National Signing Day, don't be shocked if these four coaches and programs are in the top five of every set of class rankings for 2012.
