National Signing Day 2012: 5 Undeclared Players Who Could Shake Up the Pac-12
Much like with the NFL draft or Christmas morning, recruiting and national signing day in college football bring with them both hope and uncertainty, as while you hope you get a good haul you never quite know exactly how things will shake out.
A lot of the 5-star presents have already been unwrapped, declaring where they will spend their collegiate careers, but there's still plenty of talent left under the tree, including this handful of players that could significantly alter the football landscape in the Pac-12 Conference for the next several seasons.
Darius Walters: DE/DT (Don Brosco Prep, New Jersey)
1 of 5Before Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano bolted for the National Football League, most people assumed that 6'4", 250-lb. defensive end and Jersey boy Darius Hamilton would stay in state and play for the Scarlet Knights.
However, with Schiano gone the waters have muddied, and now Florida and Cal (whom Hamilton visited recently) have emerged as candidates for the sixth-rated defensive end by Scout.com.
The Golden Bears are admittedly the dark horse in the race with the Gators, but the explosive Walters would be a fantastic late get in Berkeley.
Davonte Neal: WR/ATH (Chaparral High School, Arizona)
2 of 5Among the schools perched atop the wish list of Chaparral High School wide receiver Davonte Neal, rated as a 4-star player at his position by Rivals, are Ohio State, North Carolina and the University of Arizona.
Neal's high school coach was recently hired by new head coach Rich Rodriguez at Arizona, and perhaps if the Wildcats can get a late commitment from the 5'10" speedster, "Rich Rod" can finally have a measure of success against the Buckeyes.
Leonard Williams: DE (Mainland High School, Florida)
3 of 5A consensus 4-star prospect with a 6'5", 265-lb. frame that makes scouts drool, defensive end Leonard Williams of Daytona Beach, Fla. is no doubt coveted by any number of schools for his immense potential.
It's been reported that while a few other universities are still in the mix, Williams has for all intents and purposes narrowed his choices to Florida and USC, and should Southern Cal land the talented pass-rusher it would be another recruiting feather in USC head coach Lane Kiffin's cap.
Andrus Peat: OL (Corona Del Sol, Arizona)
4 of 5While 6'7", 280-lb. 5-star offensive tackle Andrus Peat played his high school football in Arizona, it appears he'll be leaving the state for college, as it looks like either Florida State, Nebraska, Southern California or Stanford will be securing the elite prospect's services.
However, it also seems that this one's going to be a bit of a bummer for the Pac-12, as Nebraska, where Peat's brother also plays, is considered the runaway favorite, with Peat's father saying "(his brother) would love for him to come to Nebraska. We want him to do what's best for him."
Kyle Murphy: OL (San Clemente High School, California)
5 of 5There will no such disappointment for the Pac-12 Conference where offensive tackle Kyle Murphy, who is considered a consensus top-five prospect at his position, is concerned, as the 6'7", 271-lb. Murphy will all but certainly be playing in the Pac-12 next year.
The only question remaining is whether Murphy's recent visit to the University of Southern California will be enough to sway him at the last minute from Stanford, which had long been rumored to be Murphy's collegiate destination. Of the visit Murphy said, “I had a great trip; to be honest, it was a lot better than I expected.”
