Liverpool Transfers: 6 Dream Buys to Hope for in the Summer
Liverpool opted not to spend any money in the January market, and you can read my views on that decision by clicking here.
That's all in the past now though, and there's no sense dwelling on it.
Summer should bring about some changes at Anfield.
Dalglish may realise that the likes of Downing, Adam and Carroll—as good as they are—aren't of a standard that's going to win you a Premier League title.
Sure they can put the effort in for big cup games, but the Premier League title needs players turning up and putting in a performance every week—even against the so-called minnows.
That just hasn't happened with the current squad.
So to the article then.
Dream buys could be easy to fill with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, but what would be the point in that? It would be too unrealistic.
Given that Liverpool are likely to have money to spend in January, here's my 6 dream buys that Liverpool could actually stand a chance of signing.
Enjoy.
Mats Hummels
1 of 7Big German Mats Hummels is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, and his market value is approximately £17.5 million.
That is a figure Liverpool could likely afford, and he would represent a real step up in class for Liverpool's central defence.
Hummels alongside Agger and Skrtel sounds good whilst the highly-thought-of Sebastian Coates develops in the wings.
Iker Muniain
2 of 7Iker Muniain is tipped to be the next great footballer to come out of Spain, but Muniain currently plies his trade at Athletic Bilbao.
Able to play as a forward but used mainly as a winger, Muniain could be the long term answer to Liverpool's issue of pace out wide—particularly on the right.
Being such a hot prospect, 19-year-old Muniain would be expensive, but the longevity of the purchase and future sell on fee could justify a purchase for Liverpool.
Lucas Moura
3 of 7Liverpool are devoid of attacking ideas in central midfield when Steven Gerrard doesn't play, and sooner or later Liverpool are going to have to find a replacement for him.
19-year-old Lucas Moura could be that player.
Moura currently plays for Sao Paulo and has already broken into the Brazilian national team.
Moura plays as an attacking midfielder and could be the perfect player to allow Gerrard to sink into a less dynamic role.
Again, Moura would be expensive, but if you want top quality you're going to have to pay for it.
Edinson Cavani
4 of 7Should Liverpool manage to secure a Champions League place for next season, the first thing I expect them to do is bring a striker on board.
In fact, I expect that even if they don't qualify for the Champions League.
Liverpool currently only have Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll as out and out forwards, with the likes of Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt as cover.
Suarez has been a revelation to Carroll's relatively disappointing first year, but Liverpool need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis.
That man could be Edinson Cavani.
Cavani was heavily linked with Liverpool over January but a move never surfaced.
Cavani could fancy the move to the Premier League and could cost up to £40 million.
Bearing in mind Liverpool paid £35 million for Carroll, they may think that's a worthwhile deal.
Yann M'Vila
5 of 7Despite the apparent improvement of Lucas Leiva prior to his nasty injury, Liverpool still lack cover in the defensive midfield area.
Jay Spearing has the heart and is willing to play the position, but he lacks the quality on the ball to play incisive passes.
Lucas doesn't have the most impressive range of passing either.
Yann M'Vila could be the key to improving in this area, and the young Frenchman would likely jump at the opportunity to move from club side Rennes.
M'Vila has a market value of approximately £17.5 million.
Eden Hazard
6 of 7Eden Hazard was one of the most over-mentioned players in terms of transfer gossip in January.
Largely due to the fact that he's such a terrific footballer.
Liverpool's only advantage in arranging a possible deal for Hazard is forgotten man Joe Cole.
Cole seems to have rekindled some form in French outfit Lille and could form part of a makeweight offer for Hazard as Liverpool are unlikely to match their £40 million valuation on the player outright.
Afterthoughts
7 of 7Whilst I am aware that some or possibly all of these players mentioned are somewhat "marquee," I do think that Liverpool have a reasonable chance of signing them.
The ability to finalise that deal may hinder on whether the Reds qualify for the Champions League, as the pull of European football can be too much for some players to turn down.
People may say all of these deals are too far-fetched or highly unlikely, but what is a dream without a bit of faith?
Once upon a time Liverpool could attract some of the best players in the world; now they have to attract the best in the world before the players and their managers realise that themselves.
Scouting gets harder and harder with the way footballers can market themselves now, and Liverpool will have to scour the planet or pay big in order to snare a hotshot.
A defender, three midfielders and two forwards are on my Liverpool wish list this summer, what's on yours?
