Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Video: Watch Freddie Roach's Uncensored Words for Money
Plenty of waffling has gone on from both sides regarding a possible Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight over the past two years or so. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach didn't pull any punches in blaming Mayweather for the fact that there hasn't been a fight, though.
During an ambush interview on the street, Roach essentially said that Mayweather was afraid to fight Pacquiao, although he was a bit more vulgar than that. He then went on to say that it was ridiculous that Mayweather was asking for a 70/30 split of the purse.
Also, Roach said that Pac-Man would be fighting either Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson or Tim Bradley next. Obviously Roach and the Pacquiao camp don't speak too fondly of Mayweather, but I can't help but think that both sides are somewhat responsible.
Mayweather's monetary demands can certainly be unreasonable, but Pacquiao could have made the fight happen from the very start. The main sticking point was originally Pac-Man's reluctance to accept Olympic-style drug testing. He claimed that he felt testing so close to the fight weakened him.
Whether that is true or not, the Pacquiao camp had the opportunity to make the fight happen. Since then there have been a number of issues including money and timing. Mayweather has the MGM Grand locked up for May 5, but Pacquiao and promoter Bob Arum have balked at it because of a desire to set up a large outdoor arena.
Is it possible that Mayweather is afraid to fight Pacquiao? Yes, I think it is since Mayweather has an undefeated record to uphold. At the same time, though, Pacquiao was lucky to escape against Juan Manuel Marquez in their most recent fight, while Mayweather destroyed Marquez.
Perhaps Pacquiao is the one who is actually afraid. Mayweather understandably absorbs a lot of the criticism because he likes to talk a lot and is quite boisterous. Pacquiao is a darling among boxing fans, though, and is considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter. A loss to Mayweather might change that.
Roach wants to pin all the blame on Mayweather, but I think that there's plenty of blame to go around. The amount of money that both fighters can make is astronomical, but I think pride is getting in the way at this point. Mayweather hasn't made things easy, but Roach needs to point the finger at his own guy, too.
