NBC Sports Fight Night: Why All Sports Fans Must Watch This Event

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Sports are better in the United States when all of the major networks have major sports programming. That is why sports fans should at least pop in to check out NBC Sports Fight Night. NBC has been left in the cold so to speak with many of the countries' major sports. This event could be the beginnings of a revisit to a time when major boxing matches took place on network television.

Why Is It Important to NBC?

It would make NBC relevant in a sport that no other network is targeting or promoting. Fox is going hard with the UFC, but not boxing, and no other major free network is dealing with combat sports at all.

NBC carries no MLB, NBA or collegiate basketball on its parent channel, though it can now broadcast some of that content with its recent merger with Comcast. Still, on NBC's free channel, Sunday Night Football and the horrible analysis from Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison is the highlight of their sports lineup.

How It Could Fail?

NBC will have to step up their game with the fight cards moving forward, if this is to be successful. Tonight's fight card features a bout between Bryant Jennings and Maurice Byram, two lesser known heavyweights as the main event.

While it is certainly smart to have heavyweights featured, as they supply the best chance of seeing a huge knockout, the lack of name recognition will likely deter most from watching. Those people that don't bother could be missing out on the first edition of something that becomes a sports tradition.

How It Can Succeed?

If this edition features a memorable moment that bridges the gap between hardcore boxing fans and the casual fan, it will create a buzz. If tonight's events launch the career of a future household name, it can be looked at as a launching pad for future stars.

Either of those scenarios would likely suit NBC just fine as both would increase the viewership.

How You Can See It:

The event begins at 9:00 p.m. ET, it's a live triple-header broadcast of course on NBC, and these are the undercard bouts:

Gabriel Rosado vs. Jesus Soto Karass, junior middleweights, 10 rounds.

Sullivan Barrera vs. Damar Singleton, light heavyweights, six rounds.
