Oklahoma Football Recruiting: Meet David Smith and the 7 Newest Sooners

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

As we inch closer and closer to National Signing Day, the recruiting process is beginning to heat up. The Oklahoma Sooners, who already have a solid recruiting class, have just gotten that much better with the recent commitment of a good running back in David Smith.

There's a reason Oklahoma is always in contention for a BCS National Championship and that's because of their awesome recruiting year in and year out. While others are focused on other schools that seem to be pulling in more attractive players, the Sooners aren't doing too shabby themselves.

Here are the seven most recent commitments that will be in an Oklahoma uniform next season.

DE Chaz Nelson

1 of 7

Nelson is a quick defensive end, who has great burst and the ability to also play the outside linebacker position. At 6'3", 240 pounds, he already has the size to come in and compete for playing time right away. This was a nice underrated pickup for the Sooners, as it adds much needed depth at the defensive end position.

Nelson is a 3-star player on both Scout.com and Rivals.com.

S Derrick Woods

2 of 7

Derrick Woods is rated as one of the top safeties in this year's draft class, but he would much rather play the wide receiver position. He'll probably end up on the defensive side of the ball, as he is a great tackler and has great instincts. Regardless of where he may end up, he is an athletic player, with great ball skills and will likely develop into a playmaker for the Sooners.

Woods picked Oklahoma over schools like Alabama, Miami, Oregon and USC, among others.

TE Brannon Green

3 of 7

Brannon Green comes from Fort Scott Community College and he'll have a chance to come in and make an immediate impact considering this is a thin position for the Sooners. He is a fantastic run-blocker at 6'4", 255 pounds. This may be another underrated pickup for the Sooners as he may not be the most talked about player, but he never quits on plays and is a tough kid.

Green had originally committed to Connecticut, before switching to Oklahoma.

CB Kevin Peterson

4 of 7

Peterson isn't exactly the biggest guy at 5'11", 170 pounds, but he's fast and has great ball skills. He'll likely play the cornerback position, but could end up at wide receiver or even running back. You get him in open space and he can make plays for your football team. As a corner, he's still raw at the position, but has a lot of upside if he continues to develop.

He had offers from Arizona and Tulsa as well.

CB Kasseim Everett

5 of 7

Much like Peterson, Everett is another corner that is undersized at 5'10", 180 pounds. But Everett makes up for it with his leaping ability and his physical style of play. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty by helping in run support and will lay down a big hit if given the opportunity. He has good range and covers a lot of ground in the secondary.

He originally gave his commitment to Delaware and Texas Tech, before withdrawing from both and going with Oklahoma.

TE Taylor McNamara

6 of 7

This was a big pickup for the Sooners as they need depth at the tight end position with so many of them leaving from last year. McNamara has a chance to earn playing time right away as he is a solid tight end with great size at 6'5", 245 pounds and has great hands. He still needs to work on his route running skills and his blocking ability, but as far as catching the ball goes, he gives the offense a much needed weapon.

McNamara had offers from schools like Miami, Washington, USC and Stanford, among others.

RB David Smith

7 of 7

Running back is of course another position on offense that the Sooners desperately had to fill with several backs transferring. Oklahoma took a big step in filling in that position with the most recent commitment from running back David Smith. He's an athletic running back with great ball skills and has good strength. He's not exactly a fast back, but has good quickness with the ability to kick it to the outside.

He ended up picking Oklahoma over West Virginia, after having several offers on the table.
