Ohio State Football Recruiting: Urban Meyer Having Great Buckeye Recruiting Week
In case you haven't heard, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is a pretty good recruiter.
And since being hired as head coach of the Buckeyes late in November, all he has done is put together an excellent coaching staff and swipe top recruits from many of the top Midwestern programs.
This week, he picked up where he left off in December by landing former Notre Dame commit, OT Taylor Decker of Vandalia, OH, as first reported by Scout.com.
Decker is a mobile lineman at 6'8", 300 lbs. and fits the type of linemen that new OL coach Ed Warriner, who originally recruited Decker to Notre Dame, wants to have at Ohio State in Meyer's spread offense.
That move pushed the Buckeyes to No. 4 on Scout.com's team rankings, a position that almost no one imagined Ohio State would be in due to its recent NCAA violations.
Tuesday, guard Joey O'Connor also committed to Ohio State, becoming the fourth offensive lineman to jump into this class.
That puts Ohio State at 21 commits, four below the maximum allowed.
Also going into the recruiting equation is the loss of three scholarships for this and the next two seasons as a part of the NCAA punishment of the Buckeyes' program.
But with Taylor Graham and Jeremy Cash transferring, and the dismissals of DBs DerJuan Gambrell and Dominic Clarke, the scholarship losses have been seemingly negated, at least for this year.
With only a few weeks left until national signing day, the Buckeyes are still in great position to land just a few more players.
One such player is LB David Perkins from South Bend, Indiana, who is set to announce his decision on Wednesday, according to The Buckeye Battle Cry.
He had an excellent visit to Ohio State this past weekend, and was supposed to make his announcement on national signing day. So the early announcement seems to be an indicator that a commitment to Ohio State is likely.
Other recruits like OT Jordan Diamond and WR Davonte Neal, who are expected to make their decisions either on or after national signing day, have spoken very highly of Ohio State.
LB Camren Williams and DB Armani Reeves, both Penn State commits, are expected to be in Columbus within the next few days, and may be a package deal, according to multiple reports including 11 Warriors.
Williams has shown great interest in OSU, but so far is still set to be a Nittany Lion. Reeves is in a similar situation, but doesn't seem to like Ohio State as much as Williams does.
With only four slots left to be filled, this class that Meyer has helped assemble at Ohio State is simply staggering.
There are great recruiting jobs, and then there is what Urban Meyer has done in two months. It's simply a remarkable job that must be commended because it seemed like no top recruit wanted to touch Ohio State with a 10-foot pole months ago.
Nowadays, Ohio State looks to be back on the upswing.
The Buckeyes have to wait at least until the 2013 season to be eligible to play for a national championship due to NCAA sanctions, but if he keeps recruiting in any way like he has this year, Meyer will bring a crystal football back to Columbus sooner rather than later.
