Stephen Curry: Golden State Warriors Must Wait to Bring Back Curry from Injury

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

Golden State Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry appears close to returning to game action.

After his most recent setback, however, is returning really a good thing for the Warriors?

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Curry practiced on Monday, but his ankle didn't respond like he was hoping it would.

"He was able to play some 5-on-5 for the first time in 13 days, but he said his ankle felt fatigued near the end of practice. Curry couldn't tell whether his out-of-practice legs were moving slowly or his ankle wasn't strong enough."

Curry won't play today against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but just the fact that he was considering playing means that he's close to returning.

That shouldn't even be an option at this point—even if his ankle did hold up in practice yesterday.

The risk just isn't worth the reward. The Warriors have continually "rolled" Curry back to action much too early, and it has always resulted in him re-spraining his fragile ankle.

Despite the fact that he will now miss his seventh straight game, it seems like Golden State is on the verge of rushing him back to the court.

Again.

Instead of waiting until Curry's ankle holds up in practice and then putting him out there in a game the next night, try this: Wait until his ankle holds up in practice and then wait another couple of weeks before he returns to a real game.

It's clear by now that Curry's ankles are actually made out of his glass. Literally. They are going to shatter if he keeps playing at less than 100 percent.

Simply put, he needs more time to recover than most guys. And that's fine. He's worth the wait.

The Warriors have handled this situation poorly over the last year-and-a-half, and I'm hesitant to say they've learned anything at all.

It's better to lose him for a month now, then have him play for a week and then lose him for a year.

Stephen Curry is a future All-Star. He's still just 23 years old. But the Warriors are treading on very thin, slippery, ankle-twistable ice right now.
