WWE Weekly 5: Tag Team Pairings Which Could Spice Up the Division

The Doctor Chris MuellerFeb 13, 2012

WWE's tag team division has been the subject of much of the criticism WWE has received from fans over the years. While tag teams used to be commonplace in wrestling, today they have been all but phased out.

Triple H is said to be a supporter of tag team wrestling and has been helping to rebuild the division. Air Boom was created and WWE has actually created merchandise for them, indicating they may stay around even if they lose the titles.

The Usos, Epico and Primo along with Hawkins and Reks have been trying hard to bring attention to the division again.

I am against WWE just lumping two wrestlers together and calling them a tag team, but what other choice do they have nowadays? Tag teams rarely stay together through multiple promotions like LOD and The Rockers did.

Here I will make a list of five possible pairings WWE could make that could help spice up the tag team division and add some excitement to the tag team titles again.

John Cena and Randy Orton

1 of 5

Orton and Cena are two of WWE's top guys and have a long history. They came up through OVW at the same time, debuted close together and have had dozens of matches over the years.

In real life they are friends and have known each other for roughly a decade. When they were forced to face the entire Raw roster in a handicap match they showed the kind of chemistry they could have as a team.

WWE is not likely to pair these two together to go after the tag team titles, but they have done this kind of stuff in the past.

Jericho and Big Show were paired up during Jericho's last run and formed a great heel tag team from two former world champions.

The same can be said for when Batsita and Rey Mysterio were put together. WWE has had some success with taking main eventers and pairing them up to give them something to do while others fight over the major titles.

If WWE wants to keep Cena busy after Mania without throwing him right back in the hunt for the WWE title then this could be a good way to use him.

Tyson Kidd and Yoshi Tatsu

This may seem like an odd pairing at first, but I think they would make for a very exciting tag team.

Both of these young men have tons of in ring ability, but no current push. Tyson is a heel right now, but if he turned face or Tatsu turned heel I think this could work.

Both men work a very stiff looking style which is heavy on kicks and ground holds. Both men can fly from the top rope and chain wrestle with the best of them.

They may not have much in common in terms of gimmick, but neither did Kofi and Bourne other than being high fliers, and they have been doing OK.

Kidd is someone who I feel WWE has dropped the ball with. He was part of a very popular team with Harry Smith, which was broken up for virtually no reason since neither man was given a singles push afterwards.

Tatsu changed up his gimmick last year and now wears a mask during his entrance and face paint in the ring. He has played a heel in Japan before and he was very good at it, which is why I think they could make a great heel tag team.

They would have exciting matches and bring some legitimacy to the titles if they were to hold them.

Mason Ryan and Ezekial Jackson

What do you do with two guys who have no storyline, no direction and are somewhat green in the ring? You pair them up and hope for the best.

WWE could make a very intimidating tag team with Ryan and Jackson. They are two of WWE's most jacked up superstars, and having them together would make for a team few would want to go up against.

Both of these guys have incredible power, great athleticism and the look Vince McMahon loves. Since they both seemed to have stalled in their singles runs it would be beneficial to all involved if they were paired up.

They are both faces so there would be no controversy, they both hail from outside the US so they have the kinship of being foreigners and they both need something to do.

I think it could help both men to do this, as neither of them have the in ring ability at this point in their career to really main event anything.

William Regal and Daniel Bryan

4 of 5

I am not sure how long Daniel Bryan will remain champion for, and I am not sure if he will remain in the main event scene once he loses the title. I get the feeling that WWE has less faith than they should in his ability to main event shows.

If WWE decides to take him out of the title picture, then pairing him with his former mentor to make a heel tag team would be a great move.

These two have a history which has been addressed in WWE before. They faced off on Raw awhile back and CM Punk was on commentary. Punk gave Regal credit for helping Bryan to become one of the best grapplers out there.

Regal himself is no slouch either as he has been instrumental in many other wrestler's training, as well as having had a pretty good career in his own right.

According to him, he is not planning on retiring, so why not give him something to do other than commentary?

This team would be two of the more technically gifted wrestlers in WWE, which would make any match they were in seem more important, and any win their opponents got seem more credible.

Michael McGillicutty (As Joe Hennig) and Ted Dibiase

5 of 5

Mr. Perfect and The Million Dollar Man were two of the best heels in WWE during the 80s and 90s. They both had high profile feuds with some of the greatest names in the business, and both are recognized as having been instrumental in helping make WWE a success during a time when they were cash strapped.

Their sons are both in WWE, and both are third generation as well. Dibiase and Hennig have similar looks, styles and pedigrees to where teaming them up would be a natural fit.

Hennig was originally paired up with David Otunga while in Nexus, but since then he has had worse luck than Dibiase as far as getting a push goes.

He has only recently began appearing on NXT and Superstars again. Having him turn face, or Dibiase turn heel, and pairing the two up would be great for the division as well as both superstars.

The first thing they need to do is drop that ridiculous name Hennig is using. I do not want to think of the son of Mr. Perfect as having shared the same last name as a character played for years by Lucille Ball.

I think they would operate better as a heel team, but I would take them as a baby face team too.
