College Football Recruiting 2012: Is Trey Williams a Lock to Go to Texas A&M?
Record-breaking running back Johnathan Gray may be the most highly touted recruit in Texas, but Gray isn’t the only running back in the state who has the chance to be a star at the collegiate level.
Trey Williams, who played for Houston’s Dekaney High School, may have been a bit overshadowed by Gray this past season, but the stud recruit still managed to garner a ton of respect and attention in 2011.
Williams is rated as a blue-chip, five-star prospect by nearly every major recruiting service in the country, and with offers from the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma State and Oregon, he’s also one of the most coveted players in the entire country.
No matter how many offers he’s received though, Williams has stayed committed to Texas A&M since he announced his intent to become an Aggie last spring.
The question is though, will Williams actually end up in College Station when all is said and done?
As National Signing Day draws closer, there are bound to be a few big name schools to make a late push for the All-American back, and Williams already reportedly has visits lined up to both Arkansas and Oklahoma State in the coming weeks.
That’s not good news for new coach Kevin Sumlin, who has been trying to keep A&M’s 2012 class intact after the firing of coach Mike Sherman.
Sherman’s termination, combined with the extremely disappointing campaign that the Aggies suffered through in 2011, could have some recruits rethinking their options before signing on the dotted line with Texas A&M.
Now that coveted quarterback recruit Matt Davis has signed his letter of intent, the top priority for the A&M coaching staff is to make sure that Trey Williams stands firm on his commitment.
At 5'8" and 175 pounds, Williams isn’t the biggest back on the block, but he’s the kind of playmaker who has the type of speed and vision to consistently find a crease in the defense and get to the second level.
With Cyrus Gray departing for the NFL and Christine Michael still rehabbing an injury that ended his junior season early, Williams will have the chance to step in and immediately make his presence felt as a freshman next season. That is, if he does decide to actually sign with A&M.
With schools like Arkansas and Oklahoma State ready to make one last full-court press for his services, there’s still no guarantee that Williams won’t change his mind in the next few weeks.
Until Trey Williams officially signs on the dotted line, everyone in Aggie nation will be crossing their fingers, hoping that they can land the difference-making star back who has the potential to add a big spark to the Texas A&M offense in 2012.
