2012 NFL Free Agents: 3 Teams Who Need to Make Major Moves in Offseason

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

The NFL draft is vital in slowly building a team, but in free agency, a club can get a proven commodity to come in an contribute from day one.

Let's look at the three teams that need to make major moves this offseason.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills weren't as good as their 5-2 start, but they weren't as bad as their disappointing end to the year either.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is apparently entrenched as the team's starting quarterback, and with C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, they have a promising running back duo. However, they need to bolster their receiving corps and add as much talent to their porous defense as possible.

There's a great chance that receivers Justin Blackmon and Alshon Jeffery won't be available when the Bills go on the clock with the No. 10 overall selection.

They could add a pass-rusher with their first pick, but acquiring another edge-rusher would be in the best interest of a club that failed to accumulate 30 sacks on the season.

Cliff Avril seems to be a viable option.

Although they selected cornerback Aaron Williams in the second round last year, help in their secondary would go a long way too.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons don't have a first-round or fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft thanks for their trade up to draft wide receiver Julio Jones last April.

Although they don't have a multitude of holes on their roster, adding a few veterans could help them make the next step in the highly-competitive NFC.

John Abraham is 33 years old and is a free agent. Although Atlanta will probably bring him back, they could use a shot a youthful talent to the pass rush.

With Drew Brees and an emerging Cam Newton in their division, their inferior secondary needs major help. Finding a solid corner to create a formidable duo with Brent Grimes would be a start. There are a ton of options at the defensive back spot.

Oakland Raiders

With no picks in the first four rounds of this year's draft and a nine-year playoff drought, you'd better believe the Raiders and their new regime under general manager Reggie McKenzie will be players in free agency.

The Raiders have one of the more intimidating run games in the league, but Darren McFadden has battled injuries early in his career. Although it's unlikely they'll make a big splash at the running back position, adding a veteran depth guy wouldn't be a bad idea.

On defense, Oakland needs more skill in their secondary.

Only the Minnesota Vikings gave up more passing touchdowns (34) than the 31 the Raiders allowed.

Cortland Finnegan headlines a relatively deep defensive back free-agent class in 2012.
