Why Haven't The Buffalo Bills Fired Dick Jauron?

Sean CroweJan 4, 2009

You’ll have to forgive my ignorance, because I’ve been a little preoccupied with the New England Patriots this season, but I have a question for Buffalo Bills’ fans.

How, in God’s name, did Dick Jauron keep his job?

When I read the article, I thought I was reading something from The Onion. Ralph Wilson, the man who named a stadium after himself, announced that Dick Jauron would be back to coach his team in 2009.

Which begs the question: Why?

After starting 4-1, Jauron’s team finished the season 3-8. The only reason we’re not talking about this as some sort of massive collapse is because the collapse started so early in the season.

The Bills have talent. The Bills have a decent quarterback. The Bills should have been a factor in the AFC East this season.

But they weren’t. By the end of the season, they were reduced to playing spoiler.

And they couldn’t even do that right.

How a head coach survives that play call at the end of the Jets game is beyond me. Blaming the play on JP Losman, as they did when they demoted him to third string, is just insane.

They knew who Losman was. They knew what he was likely to do. Yet even with that knowledge, they unnecessarily put a game they had wrapped up in his mistake prone hands.

I’d have fired Jauron before he made it off the field. I’d have called down from the press box and warned him that he wouldn’t be allowed entry into the locker room once the game was over.

But then, that’s just me. I expect my head coach to make rational, well thought out decisions.

The worst part is, there are good candidates out there. Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Giants’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Ravens’ defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, and Titans’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, among others.

Or hey, you could go for Eric Mangini. The guy who benefited from the worst in-game call in recent NFL history.

Think he would have put the game in Brett Favre’s hands in that same situation? Me either.

Take a shot at guys like Bill Cowher or Mike Shanahan. It’s not likely, but you never know unless you ask.

Dick Jauron is a nice guy. He was let go by the Bears because he had a talented team that he just couldn’t take to the next level. He’s reached that point in Buffalo.

The Bills need to fire Dick Jauron.

Unless, that is, they enjoyed the 2008 season.
