5 Teams That Can Break the SEC's Ridiculous BCS Stranglehold on College Football
Now that Alabama has won the national championship, the SEC has now won six straight. (Even if LSU won, they still would have won six straight.) Anyway, the SEC remains considered the top conference in college football, and it will stay that way until somebody knocks it off.
Every year the SEC receives a lot of the attention, and majority of the fans are just about sick of it. They'd like nothing more than to see a team from another conference end up winning the national championship for once. The problem is, that very few teams are capable of competing with teams that are so deep in talent.
The good news for SEC haters is that there are teams that can get the job done.
Here are a few.
Clemson Tigers
1 of 5I know what happened with the Tigers in the BCS Orange Bowl against the West Virginia Mountaineers, but this Clemson team is extremely young. You'd expect young teams to not show up sometimes and for whatever reason not play to their full potential.
But when you consider majority of this team is coming back, particularly on offense, this team is a dark horse contender for next season. They have the quarterback in Tajh Boyd, running back in Andre Ellington and of course the wide receivers with Sammy Watkins leading the way. When you have an offense that can put up over 30 points every game, you have a contender.
Consistency is the key for next season, but if the Tigers are able to play to their potential and win a watered-down ACC, they have a shot.
Oklahoma Sooners
2 of 5When is Oklahoma not a title contender? And now with the Big 12 losing a lot of starpower and quarterback Landry Jones coming back, the conference should be in the conversation one again.
The defense is going to remain very solid, the offense is losing some weapons, but it's Oklahoma. The talent is not going to be a question. You can expect the Sooners to once again be ranked very high coming into next season, and with a veteran quarterback leading the way, don't count this team out.
Oregon Ducks
3 of 5Yes, I know that Oregon is losing depth on the defensive side of the ball and is losing Heisman candidate running back LaMichael James. But last time I checked, Chip Kelly is still the head coach. And as long as that remains, this Oregon offense will be just fine. He doesn't need much to work with and with the speedsters that are still on this team like De'Anthony Thomas and Kenjon Barner, Oregon will once again be hard to stop.
I know Oregon doesn't do well outside of the Pac-12, against say an SEC team. But when a team is capable of dropping 50 points any given game, you have to keep them on a list like this, no matter how poorly they play against tougher competition.
In a Pac-12 that only has a couple of good teams, Oregon could win the conference and make a case for the national championship by running the table.
West Virginia Mountaineers
4 of 5Talking about another young team that's returning majority of their starters is West Virginia. You saw what they did against a very good Clemson football team. Coming back includes star quarterback Geno Smith, leading rusher Dustin Garrison and its top three wide receivers, including speedster Tavon Austin who should be on some Heisman ballots next season.
The defense is losing a few players, but when you're capable of scoring as much as this Mountaineers team is, who cares about defense?
The game against LSU earlier this year really showed that this team can keep up with the big boys. And I don't care what conference they end up playing in next year, this isn't a team that should be slept on.
USC Trojans
5 of 5If any team has a chance to knock off the SEC next season, it'd be the USC Trojans. This team is absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball and won't lose much heading into next year. The offense has the potential to be one of the best ever, especially with quarterback Matt Barkley returning.
USC could have been in the national championship conversation if itweren't on probation this season. Now that the Trojans are good with the NCAA, they are ready to make some noise once again on a national level.
The Trojans should easily be a national championship favorite heading into next season and have the best shot to end the SEC streak.
