BCS Rankings: Why Alabama Crimson Tide Shutout Proved BCS Got Title Game Right
Long before the BCS National Championship Game was ever played, there was an outcry that the Alabama Crimson Tide did not deserve a second chance against the LSU Tigers, but they proved everyone wrong by winning 21-0, making it the first ever shutout in the BCS title game.
The computers that everyone loves to hate did the right thing by selecting Alabama over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, as the Crimson Tide showed the country that they truly are the best team in the nation.
Let's not forget that Alabama could've easily won the first meeting against LSU if it just made the field goals. This time around it did, and the Crimson Tide defense made sure the Tigers did nothing all night long.
Everyone can agree that LSU was the best team in the country going into the title game, as the Tigers' body of work was more than enough proof. The debate was whether or not Alabama was actually the second-best team in the country.
The Crimson Tide certainly put their doubters to rest with their shutout victory, which made them the best team in the nation.
While Oklahoma State certainly has a case to make, Alabama was the better team. Even though many might have felt the championship game was boring, it was just a reflection of how dominant the Crimson Tide defense was and further proof that the BCS made the right call in picking Alabama.
Alabama ranked No. 1 in all the major defensive categories, and the shutout in the title game makes it easier to say that this defense was one of, if not the best ever in college football.
Sure, the Cowboys vs. the Tigers would have been an interesting game, but Oklahoma State lost to an unranked Iowa State, and that is the main reason it didn't belong in the title game.
In 20 or so years, people will look at the score of this game and think Alabama scored three touchdowns and demolished LSU.
That wasn't the case at all, but the Crimson Tide did own LSU for the night, making the most of their second chance.
While some will say the month off was the reason to blame for LSU's lack of production, it's how the system is set up, and we as fans just have to live with it.
The current system has been off before, and we ended up with split national titles, but Alabama's impressive domination was great evidence as to why there's no need for a split.
The Crimson Tide shut down everyone in their path this year, and if it weren't for a few missed field goals, they could've been undefeated on the year.
I have a feeling they're just fine with how it all ended.
