Tiger Woods: Former Swing Coach Hank Haney Taking Positive Route for New Book
Hank Haney used to be the swing coach for Tiger Woods, and if there's anything you'd like to know about his time with golf's biggest star, you can read his new book, "The Big Miss."
Given the last year or so of their time together, Haney certainly has a lot of information on Tiger, meaning this is definitely an intriguing book.
However, instead of promoting the book by talking up the scandal Woods went through, Haney told the Associated Press it's all about the six years he spent with Tiger and the observations he made during that time.
"I get asked all the time about Tiger, what it was like to work with him,'' Haney said in a telephone interview. ''I felt like I had a front row seat to golf history. It just kind of chronicles a little bit of what I went through, what I dealt with, how I coached and the observations I made.''
Of course, the scandal is visited in the book because it played a role in why Haney is no longer with Tiger. Coming back from all the embarrassment, Tiger's first tournament was the 2010 Masters—after which, he and Haney parted ways.
Tiger needed a fresh new all-around start, so he set out to find a new swing coach.
Haney claims he "didn't even have a contract" about whether or not he was allowed to talk about the scandal, and that the book isn't intended to 'take jabs at anyone.''
This is the proper way to go about promoting his new book, which is title "The Big Miss."
Haney could have easily bashed Tiger for letting him go, or mentioned stories of different women around the golf star.
Instead, Haney is informative, which is nice to see.
With a case like this, one would normally see the author do whatever it takes to help make people buy the book.
If that means bringing out all the negatives and scandalous information just to get the extra cash, then so be it. After all, the money is the only thing they're after.
Haney, on the other hand, does no such thing.
"Anybody who reads it will think it's interesting, very fair and honest, and that's what I wanted to do. I was on that job for six years. There were 110 days a year I was with him. I stayed at his house for close to 30 days a year. You make a lot of observations.''
Perhaps this book will tell the reader more about Tiger the person, which, in turn, could give the reader a better insight as to why Tiger did the things he did or why his golf game virtually disappeared during the hard times.
As far as the scandal goes, Haney did touch on that, but claimed he didn't know a whole lot.
""I didn't know anything about the girls. That's not something I could specifically comment on. Everything I comment on is what I observed and the facts I knew. I didn't know anything about that. But I did know about how he interacted with me about that, what my observations were and other areas in terms of how I dealt with and the aftermath."
"
In the interview with the Associated Press, Haney even declined to reveal his favorite moment.
The former swing coach to one of the greatest golfers in the world is taking a smart approach to this book, which Haney said he'd always known he would eventually write.
That shouldn't be a surprise because he was working with such a prominent figure, and Haney saw a lot of success with Tiger.
The scandal made things a little easier on Haney though, simply because people want to hear what anyone associated with Tiger had to say.
You have to commend Haney for not cutting Tiger down by selling out and focusing strictly on the scandal.
The book is about his tenure with Tiger, and that's what he wants people to know.
The easy path would have been to take a shot at Tiger, but Haney is respectful and wants people to read the book for a different story.
