Miami Football: A Report on the Future Hurricanes at the All-American Games

Bleacher ReportJun 7, 2018

There were only four future Hurricanes that were represented last week in the Army and Under Armour All-American high school football games.

Miami had a total of three commits at the Under Armour game and one that played in the Army game.

Things changed, though, in the Army game, as Deon Bush and Tyriq McCord surprisingly committed to Miami.

I honestly thought that Miami was going to lose more recruits over the last few months just because of the possible sanctions Miami will get stemming from the Nevin Shapiro debacle.

Here is my take on the now six verbal commits that played in both All-American games.

Preston Dewey, QB

1 of 6

High School: St. Andrew's High School (Tex.)

Star rating: Three (scout.com)

All-American game: Under Armour, Black Roster

Notes: Preston Dewey was unable to play due to a hip flexor he sustained in practice. He still dressed and could have been used, but it was stated that all he would be able to do was hand the ball off.

Angelo Jean-Louis, WR

2 of 6

High School: Palm Beach Central High School (Fla.)

Star rating: Four (scout.com)

All-American game: Under Armour, Black roster

Notes: Angelo Jean-Louis didn't have huge numbers; in fact, he only caught one pass for seven yards. He had many passes come his way, but they were way off target. Jean-Louis moves very well and can turn on a dime.

Although he never had many opportunities to show his skill, former NFL coach Steve Mariucci was impressed.

“I know he can play corner, but I’d like to see him play receiver first,” said Mariucci, now an analyst on NFL Network.

“He can catch the ball, has a good feel on his routes and released off the line of scrimmage pretty well when we did some bump-and-run stuff. He caught my attention.”

Randy "Duke" Johnson, RB

3 of 6

High School: Miami Norland High School (Fla.)

Star rating: Five (scout.com)

All-American game: Under Armour, Black roster

Notes: Duke Johnson was the lone bright spot for the black team. He led all rushers for 50 yards on just nine carries. He also had an impressive 71-yard kickoff return that lead to a touchdown.

Johnson is a very shifty running back and has incredible acceleration. Once he gains some weight on his small 5'9" frame, he will be hard to stop.

Johnson did have two fumbles in the game, one rushing and one on a kickoff return to open the second half. He is not known as a fumbler and could have just been nerves, but either way, it's something he will need to correct when he starts playing football at the next level.

Rapheal Kirby, LB

4 of 6

High School: Stephenson High School (GA)

Star rating: Four (scout.com)

All-American game: Army, East roster

Notes: Kirby didn't have a monster game, but is a very solid linebacker for Miami.  He is a very hard-hitting linebacker and was all over the field on Saturday.

The only knock I have on Kirby was that he played out of a position on pass plays, but that could have been because of the lack of practice time the players had with each other.

I am unable to locate official numbers, but I have him with six tackles, one unassisted.

Deon Bush, S

5 of 6

High School: Christopher Columbus High School (Fla.)

Star rating: Four (scout.com)

All-American game: Army, East roster

Notes: Deon Bush surprised the nation when he chose Miami over Auburn and Alabama. The four-star recruit is a terrific cover corner with tremendous athletic ability.

The game itself never really proved anything for Bush, but he did make a few tackles. He also missed a few though including being hurdled over by the West team's running back, T.J Yeldon.

Tyriq McCord, DE

6 of 6

High School: Jefferson Senior High School (Fla.)

Star rating: Four (scout.com)

All-American game: Army, East roster

Notes: Tyriq McCord was another surprise commit after choosing the Hurricanes over the Gamecocks.

Although McCord is undersized for a defensive end, at 6'3", 223 pounds, he makes up for it with his speed and quickness.

McCord had a very solid game with a few tackles, a couple quarterback pressures and a sack. Although he passed the quarterback very well, he struggled against the run, as the bigger offensive linemen were able to push the smaller McCord around pretty easily.

Once he adds more bulk, he will become a much better end.

The only thing that scares me about McCord is that he is still visiting with USC, and he will be taking a visit to California before signing day.

Until he signs, I will take his verbal commit with a grain of salt.
