TNA Genesis: Did Rob Van Dam's Loss to Gunner Signify the End of His TNA Tenure?
Over the past few weeks, there have been rumors about RVD leaving TNA and possibly heading back to the WWE. These rumors grew as word leaked that Van Dam's contract with TNA is up within the next few months.
I, for one, was surprised to hear RVD wanted to once again take on WWE's schedule. Especially considering he took a hiatus from TNA while he was the champ and let's face it, TNA is not known for their grueling work schedule.
Since Van Dam's return in 2010, he has been used sparingly and never was given a title run again. Which is pretty crazy considering Jeff Hardy held the title multiple times while he was battling a substance addiction. Overall RVD's TNA run could me considered mediocre at best. Most times he is the guy that is used to put over another guy.
Which normally would not be a huge deal especially considering Van Dam's age. However, he usually doesn't have longstanding feuds with these wrestlers. In fact, the feud's usually culminate within a match or two. Ideally, it should take some time feuding with someone of RVD's caliber to put over a younger wrestler.
Insert Gunner, here we are seeing Gunner and RVD in a grudge match that ended at Sunday night's Genesis. This feud is barely a month old and chances are it's now done. So ideally it may be best for both sides to part ways and allow RVD to pursue other options.
Don't get me wrong, I don't entirely fault TNA for not giving him another shot. Mostly due to him being handed the ball and then abandoning the title. Another reason being, the flack TNA continually gets when they boost older guys over their home-grown talent.
It now appears TNA is going back in that direction as several guys who have been with the company for years have been front and center of late.
If this indeed is the beginning of the end for RVD and TNA, hopefully they will be more low-key about it. As opposed to how they handled Christian's departure in 2008.
