2012 NHL All-Star Game: Daniel Alfredsson and 6 Worthy Captain Candidates
The 2012 NHL All-Star Game is in Ottawa this season, and with the results of the fan voting revealed, we are now awaiting the rest of the roster to be named by the NHL Hockey Operations staff.
There will be two captains who will pick from the pool of players selected to the All-Star squad, and there are no shortage of worthy candidates.
Last season's captains were Carolina Hurricanes forward Eric Staal and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom.
Let's look at the six best possible choices for this year's All-Star Game captains.
Daniel Alfredsson
1 of 6Daniel Alfredsson is the captain of the Ottawa Senators and is the franchise's greatest player.
He has 31 points this season on 13 goals and 18 assists.
Last season, the All-Star Game was played in Carolina, so Hurricanes captain Eric Staal represented the hometown team as one of the game's captains.
Alfredsson should represent the Senators as captain of this year's game.
The fact that he has played very well this season and is the hometown hero make a him a worthy choice for captain.
Jonathan Toews
2 of 6Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is one of the best young players in the NHL and has led his team to the fourth-best record in the Western Conference.
Toews has scored 22 goals with 19 assists this season and has also played fantastic in his own end as a defensive forward.
Toews is projected to score 42 goals and amass 82 points this season—both would be career highs.
He is one of the best leaders in hockey and is a perfect choice for an All-Star captain.
Henrik Sedin
3 of 6Henrik Sedin led the Vancouver Canucks to a huge win on Saturday in his team's Stanley Cup rematch against the Boston Bruins, and he is currently the NHL's leading scorer with 49 points.
Sedin is one of the league's best playmakers and is a superstar offensive talent.
He will be among the first people the league's hockey operations staff selects to the All-Star roster.
Sedin's leadership as captain of the Canucks and his tremendous play on the ice make him a worthy candidate to be an All-Star captain.
Evgeni Malkin
4 of 6Evgeni Malkin is a leader on the Pittsburgh Penguins, and his play this season without superstar teammate Sidney Crosby has been phenomenal.
Malkin has 44 points this season, which ranks seventh in the NHL.
He has only played in 33 games, though, the fewest of any player in the top 10 in points, making his season even more impressive.
The Russian star has elevated his game without his star teammate this year and still has the Penguins playing at an elite level.
Patrice Bergeron
5 of 6After goalie Tim Thomas, Patrice Bergeron he is the most deserving All-Star from the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins.
He is second on the Bruins with 34 points and has elevated his playmaking skills this season with his exquisite passing and playmaking ability.
Bergeron is also the leading candidate for the Frank J. Selke award, given annually to the NHL's best defensive forward.
As a leader and fantastic two-way player, it's time for Bergeron to get the recognition he deserves with a worthy All-Star appearance. He would also be a very good All-Star captain.
Nicklas Lidstrom
6 of 6Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom is one of the best defenseman in NHL history, and even at age 41 he is playing at an elite level.
While the Red Wings have struggled at times this season, Lidstrom's performance has been consistent, and his leadership is hugely important to the team's success.
As one of the greatest captains ever, Lidstrom deserves another chance at being an All-Star Game captain.
