Jimmy Butler Gives Cryptic Answer on Desire to Be with Heat amid NBA Trade Rumors
Jimmy Butler didn't give a definitive answer when asked if he wanted to remain with the Miami Heat organization on Tuesday.
"That's a good question," Butler said, per Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
The six-time All-Star also didn't appear to be interested in providing insight when asked about potential discussions between his agent and Heat president Pat Riley.
"Next," Butler said, via Winderman.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday that the veteran "prefers" to be moved from Miami, but he hasn't formally requested a trade.
One day later, Riley released a statement that appeared to put an end to the trade buzz.
"We usually don't comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches," Riley said. "Therefore, we will make it clear - We are not trading Jimmy Butler."
The 35-year-old faced questions surrounding his desire for a trade on Tuesday, explaining that the situation is out of his hands.
"Does it matter? Does it? I don't think so, all of that is out of my control anyways... I'm here, I'm hooping," Butler said, via Zachary Weinberger of Clutch Points.
Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald previously reported that the Heat feel "no obligation" to move Butler and would be open to "taking this soap opera into July." Jackson noted that the forward can force Miami's hand by being "highly disruptive," but he hasn't been so far.
Butler has some familiarity with accelerating his desire to be dealt, most notably during his infamous Minnesota Timberwolves trade saga.
While Butler's comments on Tuesday are certainly vague, he doesn't appear to attempting to force his way out just yet.
He has an opportunity to reach free agency at the end of the season, owning a $52.4 million player option for his 2025-26 campaign. ESPN's Brian Windhorst confirmed that Butler doesn't intend to pick up the option.
In 20 starts this season, Butler is averaging 18.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from three-point territory and 78.2 percent on free throws.
The Heat don't seem to be willing to entertain trade talks involving the star, but Butler still might not view his long-term future in Miami.
