NFLN: Tom Brady 'to Have a Huge Voice' with Raiders' QB1 Search, Says Mark Davis
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis intends for minority stakeholder Tom Brady to "have a huge voice in the organization" as it searches for a new starting quarterback in the offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Davis told Rapoport he has long sought additional insight into the search for a true franchise QB, and he believes Brady can be a valuable presence in that process.
Davis has maintained this position from the moment Brady was confirmed as a limited partner for the Raiders. He said in October he thought the surefire Hall of Famer "can help us select a quarterback in the future and potentially train him as well."
The message was pretty much the same when Davis recently spoke about Las Vegas' need for a new quarterback:
Brady's pursuit to purchase a minority share in the Raiders initially hit a hurdle due to the rule precluding equity stakeholders from having an official role within the organization. It sounds like the 47-year-old will still have the opportunity to provide input in an unofficial capacty.
Then there's Brady's work in the broadcast booth with Fox. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio outlined the conflict of interest at play, despite the NFL limiting the access he has that's typically part of a broadcaster's pregame prep work.
"Brady has a fiduciary duty to the Raiders," Florio wrote. "Anything he sees while doing his Fox job can and should be used to help the Raiders."
That could manifest in subtle ways, such as talking up a quarterback who could theoretically be on Las Vegas' radar as a free agent.
Former Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers was fined $50,000 in 2019 for violating the NBA's anti-tampering rule when, as an analyst on ESPN, he talked up Kawhi Leonard. Leonard signed with the Clippers later that summer.
Whether through the 2025 NFL draft or free agency, the Raiders are bound to have a new starting quarterback next year. None of Aidan O'Connell, Desmond Ridder or Gardner Minshew is a viable option.
General manager Tom Telesco will presumably have the most influence in that process. He clearly won't be the only big name internally weighing in, though.
