Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors: No 'Serious Offer Yet' but Heat Are 'Seriously Listening'
It may be a matter of when and not if for a potential Jimmy Butler trade this season.
On Saturday, David Aldridge of The Athletic reported the Miami Heat and Butler "seem destined to part ways" via trade at some point this season. He noted that could change if the Heat offered him a two-year, $113 million extension but called such a possibility "not likely."
While "nothing has approached a serious offer yet," Aldridge reported "the Heat are indeed seriously listening for the first time."
Butler has a $52.4 million player option for the 2025-26 campaign, and moving him would allow Miami to get something in return and not have to worry about that contract being on its books next season. Without a trade, the six-time All-Star could decide to decline the option and end up on a different team regardless without the return package a move would bring.
Heat team president Pat Riley was also critical of Butler during the offseason and wasn't a fan of the public comments he made suggesting Miami would have defeated the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in the playoffs if he was healthy.
The Heat are 13-10 and in fifth place in the current Eastern Conference standings. They have ground to make up against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic and Knicks, and they could also struggle in a playoff series against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.
If the front office decides a title run in a strong Eastern Conference is unlikely at best with the current group, it could look to move the 35-year-old Butler and facilitate a quick rebuild with an eye on next season and beyond.
It seems like things are trending toward a trade, which will make the five-time All-NBA selection who has a history of thriving in the postseason one of the biggest storylines ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline.
