Belichick, of course, has been widely speculated in connection with the Cowboys' head coaching job should owner Jerry Jones decide to move on from McCarthy after his contract runs out following the end of this season.
ESPN's Adam Schefter notably had this to say on the Nov. 18 edition of Monday Night Countdown.
"Lots of speculation swirling about what the Cowboys will do," Schefter said. "People have even thought about Bill Belichick, having been spotted in Dallas last week. It can be confirmed Bill Belichick was in Dallas last week, but it wasn't to meet with the Cowboys. It was for a previously scheduled speaking engagement.
"Still, that doesn't stop the idea that there are people across the league who continue to believe that Bill Belichick will be one of the top considerations for Jerry Jones after this season."
Belichick, who won two Super Bowls as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator before getting six more as the New England Patriots' head coach, could have been a candidate for the Cowboys' gig given his tremendous resume.
It's not happening, though, after Belichick took the UNC gig.
McCarthy's job is still up in the air, though, especially amid a disappointing 5-8 season that has the Cowboys on the brink of being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.
For now, he remains on the sidelines as Dallas looks to get on the winning track Sunday at the Carolina Panthers.
