Cowboys' Stephen Jones: 'Whole Team' Endorses Mike McCarthy amid Dak Prescott Remarks

Paul KasabianDec 7, 2024

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott recently and wholeheartedly endorsed head coach Mike McCarthy, whose future is uncertain as he guides his 5-7 team in the final year of his contract.

When asked about Prescott's remarks on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the "whole team" endorses McCarthy, mentioning his resume (which includes a Super Bowl XLV win) and saying that he "knows what it takes to win in this league."

McCarthy is in his fifth year as the Cowboys' head coach. He's led the team to the playoffs after 12-win campaigns each of the past three seasons, but that's only resulted in one postseason victory and zero NFC Championship Game appearances.

If the whole team endorses McCarthy, then that begs the question as to why he hasn't had a contract extension as of yet. Owner Jerry Jones previously said that hasn't been ruled out.

Jones also offered more praise of late too.

"Quality of character, quality of football character, he's steady as a rock…" Jones said, per Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com. "He's genuine, he's no BS with these players, and I've never thought for one second that the team had quit recognizing what an outstanding coach he is."

It's clear that there's been a lot of McCarthy backing of late, and Prescott's recent remarks certainly made headlines.

"I believe in him wholeheartedly," Prescott said Tuesday, per Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. "I don't want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance — another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. 'On his terms' may be a good way to say it.

"But I wholeheartedly believe in him."

Of course, the "on his terms" part got people talking, to the point where McCarthy was asked to address the perception that he may not have as much influence on the team as he should be given by upper management.

Boiling it down to wins and losses, the fact of the matter is that Dallas hasn't found playoff success under him, or any coach for that matter since the team was winning Super Bowls in the 1990s.

Perhaps Dallas will simply want to start anew and hope to find a coach that will end a three-decade streak without a Super Bowl.

Or maybe there's something to the recent remarks by Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Prescott. There's been enough evidence to suggest here that McCarthy could very well stay.

That being said, the Cowboys' last five games could further determine his fate. Dallas has enjoyed a surge of late, winning its last two, including a big 34-26 victory against a Washington Commanders team it's chasing in the standings.

The Cincinnati Bengals are up next for the 5-7 Cowboys, who will host them on Monday night at 8:15 p.m. ET.
