NFL Rumors: Cowboys, Jaguars Expected to Have HC Openings After 2024 Season

Zach BacharDec 6, 2024

The Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to be among the teams searching for a new head coach once the 2024 season comes to a close, according to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.

"The Jets, Saints and Bears all have vacant jobs, and sources believe the Cowboys and Jaguars will have openings at the end of the year," Jones wrote on Friday. "The belief has been there will be between six to eight coaching jobs this cycle."

While teams aren't able to conduct head coaching searches until the regular season concludes, there should be several new faces patrolling the sidelines in 2025.

Mike McCarthy is in the midst of his fifth season as head coach of the Cowboys. After helping Dallas reach 12 wins in each of the past three years, the team has struggled mightily in 2024.

The Cowboys sit at 5-7 through 13 weeks. While they're currently on a two-game win streak, it'll be difficult for them to rally and compete for a playoff spot with quarterback Dak Prescott undergoing season-ending hamstring surgery.

Health issues have been prevalent on both sides of the ball, with key players such as Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence and Zack Martin all missing multiple games. While injuries obviously aren't McCarthy's fault, it's still disappointing to see Dallas fall from the NFL's No. 1 scoring offense in 2023 to No. 21 in 2024.

The job security of Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson has been a topic of discussion as the year has progressed, with Jacksonville owning a 2-10 record.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that it "would not be a surprise" if the organization chose to move on from Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke with a loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 11.

While they weren't fired following the eventual defeat, it's tough to envision Pederson returning if the Jaguars continue to struggle. Jacksonville is currently riding a five-game losing streak and starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder issue as well as a concussion.

If McCarthy and Pederson can't close out the year on a high note, they could be searching for new jobs once the offseason begins.
