College Football Playoffs 2024-25: Week 14 Clinch and Bracket Elimination Scenarios
Conference championship week will go a long way in determining the bracket for the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff, but it's still not clear which teams will be playing for conference titles in two weeks.
The final week of the 2024 college football regular season is coming up, with plenty of conference title game berths still on the line. In fact, none of the matchups are yet set for any of the Power Four conference championship clashes.
After the latest CFP rankings were released Tuesday, the projected field continues to take shape. But a lot could still change over the next couple of weeks.
Heading into Week 14, here's a look at the landscape for conference championships that will also have an impact on the CFP picture.
Ohio State Trying to Earn Rematch Against Oregon
1 of 4
Oregon (11-0) is the only undefeated college football team in the nation and has already clinched its spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. But there are still three potential opponents for the Ducks: Ohio State, Penn State and Indiana.
The Buckeyes are in the best position to reach the Big Ten title game. They can secure a spot with a home win over Michigan on Saturday. They'd also make it if both the Nittany Lions (vs. Maryland) and the Hoosiers (vs. Purdue) lose, though that is unlikely to happen.
Penn State needs a win and an Ohio State loss, while Indiana must beat Purdue and have both Ohio State and the Nittany Lions lose. It's also possible that losses by either Penn State or the Hoosiers could knock them out of the CFP conversation, depending on how the rest of the next two weeks unfold.
So, there will be motivation for Penn State and Indiana to win, even if Ohio State is victorious as well. As for the Buckeyes, they could soon get an opportunity to avenge their lone loss of the season, as they previously fell 32-31 at Oregon on Oct. 12.
Place in SEC Title Game on the Line at College Station
2 of 4
The landscape for the SEC Championship Game picture is simple, with Georgia having already clinched one of the two berths. The other will go to the winner of the Texas-Texas A&M game on Saturday.
If the Longhorns are victorious, they'll get an opportunity to avenge their lone loss of the season, as they fell 30-15 at home vs. the Bulldogs on Oct. 19. Texas has since gotten back on track with four straight wins, each coming against an SEC opponent.
The Aggies had a surprising loss last Saturday, when they fell 43-41 in four overtimes at Auburn. It marked Texas A&M's second loss in three games, as it was also defeated at South Carolina. But if it can quickly rebound, it will still be heading to the SEC Championship Game.
Texas is currently in its first season in the SEC, while Texas A&M has never reached the SEC Championship Game since joining the conference ahead of the 2012 season.
Miami or Clemson Will Face SMU for ACC Title
3 of 4
Much like the SEC, the conference championship landscape in the ACC is straightforward. SMU has already clinched a spot in the conference title game, and it will take on either Miami or Clemson for the ACC championship.
If Miami wins at Syracuse on Saturday, then it will reach the ACC Championship Game. But if the Hurricanes lose, then Clemson will get the opportunity to play for the ACC title.
It's hard to imagine the 'Canes losing to the Orange, even on the road. Miami has only one blemish on its schedule (a 28-23 loss at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9), and it got back on track with a 42-14 home victory over Wake Forest last week.
SMU is playing its first season in the ACC, while Miami has never won the conference championship since joining ahead of the 2004 season. No school has won more ACC titles than Clemson, which has captured the championship 21 times (most recently in 2022).
Who Will Emerge from Crowded Big 12 Standings?
4 of 4
The Big 12 standings are a crowded mess, with nine teams still in the mix to play in the conference championship game.
The front-runners are Arizona State, Iowa State, BYU and Colorado, each of which has a 6-2 record in Big 12 play and is tied atop the conference standings.
If the Sun Devils (at Arizona), the Cyclones (vs. Kansas State), the Cougars (vs. Houston) and the Buffaloes (vs. Oklahoma State) all win their regular-season finales, then Arizona State and Iowa State will meet in the Big 12 Championship Game. It's quite possible that will happen.
Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia all have 5-3 conference records and have outside chances at reaching the Big 12 Championship Game. However, it would take help for any of those teams to get in.
No matter what happens, the Big 12 is guaranteed to have a new champion as the reigning title game winner (Texas) is now in the SEC.
