Video: Drew Lock Questions Not Being Named Giants QB1 After Daniel Jones Benching

Scott PolacekNov 20, 2024

Any New York Giants fans wondering why Tommy DeVito is starting Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers instead of Drew Lock aren't alone.

Lock is wondering that as well.

"That's a question that I might still have for myself," he told reporters Wednesday. "It was expressed to me that I was going to be QB2. Interesting situation. Not much I can really say about it besides, again, I'm going to be here for him and we're still communicating and still very good friends, believe it or not. I'm going to be here for him, the team needs to get a win and if we start winning everything will get a little better around here."

The new backup quarterback wondering why he isn't starting just days ahead of a game isn't an ideal situation for the Giants to be in, but neither is benching their supposed franchise quarterback who received a contract extension last year and was the No. 6 overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft.

Yet that is exactly what the Giants did when they decided to bench Daniel Jones.

Jones has certainly struggled with a 2-8 record as a starter and eight touchdown passes to seven interceptions. Pro Football Reference ranks him at 32nd in the league in passer rating and 29th in QBR among 36 qualified quarterbacks.

To say he has failed to live up to his contract would be an understatement, although there may have been a financial component to the decision since there is a clause in his contract that means the Giants would owe him $23 million whether he was on the team or not if he suffered an injury that prevented him from passing a physical in March.

Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz reported there is "disappointment" among multiple Giants players because they believe Jones was benched because of financial reasons only. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence said he is "the best quarterback on the team," while an offensive player said, "we're not idiots. They did it because of money."

Still, benching Jones wasn't the only surprise, as Lock was seen as the backup quarterback earlier in the season and has plenty of experience with 23 career starts for the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos.

This could have been an opportunity for him to prove himself, but the Giants instead decided to try to recreate some of the magic last season when DeVito went 3-3 as a starter and turned heads by being better than expected as an undrafted free agent.

It's safe to say Lock isn't thrilled with the situation, although he offered his support as New York prepares for the upcoming matchup with the Buccaneers.
