Lakers Rumors: JJ Redick, LA's 'Non-Negotiables' for 2024-25 NBA Reason Revealed
Los Angeles Lakers head coach J.J. Redick began training camp by showing players a video presentation on which team values he saw as "non-negotiables" heading into the 2024-25 season, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin and Matt Williams.
According to McMenamin and Williams, sources said that some of these values were:
"Playing for the same, common goal... Expecting elite execution night to night, no matter who is in or out of the lineup... Being efficient in everything, from shot selection for the players to time management from the coaches... Dominating the details, whether it's the angle a screen is set on offense, or the timing of blitzing a pick-and-roll on defense."
"These were our non-negotiables," a Lakers source told ESPN. "Come hell or high water, we will go back to this as a team."
Ahead of the presentation, which took place at a steakhouse in Beverly Hills, players received t-shirts with the word DETAILS printed across the chest, per McMenamin and Williams.
The Lakers are off to a 6-4 start in Redick's first season as head coach. That's a similar mark to last year's 5-5 start under Darvin Ham, with a similar roster excepting the addition of No. 17 pick Dalton Knecht.
That isn't to say Redick hasn't made changes, including benching D'Angelo Russell in exchange for Cam Reddish while stressing the need for improvements on defense in addition to taking some ball-handling duties away from LeBron James.
James is currently posting a 24.8 percent usage rate, which if it stands over the season would mark the lowest of his career, as noted by ESPN. His assist rate has meanwhile increased to 8.9 per game, his highest average since he led the league with 10.2 assists per game in 2019-20.
That change has involved getting the ball more to Anthony Davis, who said he will be ready to play against the Grizzlies after leaving Sunday night's win over the Toronto Raptors early with an eye injury.
The Lakers have already seen ups and downs in the early stretch of the season, going 3-0 at home to start the season, struggling to a 1-4 finish on a subsequent road trip, then returning home to stack up two more wins.
After Wednesday's home game against the Grizzlies, Redick will face his next test when the Lakers look to establish themselves as winners on the road during back-to-back games against the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans this weekend.
