Broncos' Sean Payton Takes Blame for Chiefs Loss, Says Blocked FG 'On Us as Coaches'

Taylyn HadleyNov 11, 2024

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is refraining from blaming his team after their last-second 16-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which came down to a blocked field goal as time expired.

"I read all the comments afterwards and I think that it's tough to lose a game that way. This isn't on the player. This is on all of us. This is on us as coaches," Payton told reporters on Monday. "We've got to continue to look at, 'Hey, are we big enough stature-wise there for that?' And understanding how the rush was coming. It's disappointing, and yet it's not something that's new when a big play is made at the end of a game."

Denver led 14-10 at halftime but went scoreless in the second half, allowing the Chiefs to kick two field goals to take the lead.

Broncos fans nationwide thought Denver had the game secured as kicker Will Lutz lined up for a 35-yard field goal attempt, only for Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal to block the potential game-winner.

"When something like that happens, and it's not the first — like it could be a trick play, or it could be whatever," Payton told reporters. "It's pretty common for the team that had success with it to say, 'Hey we saw. . . ' Credit them for that. They exploited an area that we obviously felt was fixed and stronger, but not fixed enough.

The blocked kick secured the Chiefs' ninth straight win, keeping them undefeated this season.

Blame shifted toward Broncos center Alex Forsyth, but Payton emphasized that he and his coaching staff could have made adjustments, as the Chiefs had clearly scouted their weak spots.

"They felt like they had an indication relative to how [Alex Forsyth's] weight was balanced," Payton said. "All of that is game planning, scouting and then it's us coaching and looking at the self-scout. Again it's nothing new."

The Broncos fell to 5-5 and will look to bounce back after the disappointing loss when they face the Atlanta Falcons at home on Sunday.
