What To Make Of CeeDee Lamb's Fantasy Value In The Wake Of Dak Prescott's Injury?
In five games with Cooper Rush as the starter back in 2022, Lamb caught 31 passes on 49 targets for 380 yards and two touchdowns. On a per-game basis, that's 6.2 catches on 9.8 targets for 76 yards and 0.4 touchdowns. Extrapolated out to a 17-game season, you're looking at 105 catches for 1,292 yards and six touchdowns.
That's good production! (Albeit derived from a very small sample size.) But they aren't the sort of elite numbers that Lamb posted last season (135 catches for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns) or equal to the pace he's been on this year (which would currently put him at 112 catches for 1,402-yards and eight touchdowns across 17 games).
Also keep in mind that in 2022 the Cowboys rushed for 135.2 yards per game, ninth in the NFL. These Cowboys don't have that type of balance on offense and currently rank 31st in the NFL on the ground (82 yards per game). It will be far easier for a defense to focus its attention on blanketing Lamb and pressuring Rush than it was two seasons ago.
Now, it's possible that Prescott will only miss a handful of games and Lamb will return to his regularly-scheduled dominance as the playoff weeks kick off. But given the uncertainty regarding both Prescott's timeline and Lamb's own shoulder injury—and Prescott's situation, in particular, doesn't look good—such projections are murky.
Lamb is going to still be a solid option for fantasy players, but likely as more of a WR2. That may open up opportunities to buy low given the potential panic over Prescott's injury, though there are enough risks present that you absolutely shouldn't pay top-of-the-market prices.
If you have Lamb, however, you probably need to hold. Nobody is going to overpay for him at this point, and you don't want to give away a player for pennies on the dollar when he can still serve as a solid starter for you. This likely isn't as bleak an outcome for Lamb as Tua Tagovailoa's injury was for Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, for instance, but some decline in production should be expected.
