Prescott left the Cowboys' 27-21 loss in the third quarter when he limped off the field after throwing an incomplete pass. He didn't return to the game and his status going forward was unclear.
Jones told reporters after the game he was "concerned" about Prescott's status, but they wouldn't know anything for certain until his MRI on Monday.
Prescott told reporters on Sunday he "felt something pull" in his hamstring, and it was like "something I've never felt."
Being placed on injured reserve would keep Prescott out for at least four games. The earliest he would be eligible to return is the Cowboys' Week 14 game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
Prescott hasn't missed a start since the 2022 season when he suffered a broken thumb in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and missed five games. He is one of many Cowboys players who have been struggling so far this season.
Coming off a second-place finish in MVP voting last year, Prescott has his lowest completion percentage (64.7) since 2017 with 1,978 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight starts in 2024.
Cooper Rush, who finished the Falcons game after Prescott's injury, is in line to be the starter in Dallas for the time being. He went 4-1 in the five games Prescott missed in 2022.
The Cowboys (3-5) are already facing an uphill climb to make the playoffs in the NFC. They are 2.5 games behind the Green Bay Packers for the final wild card spot.
Dallas' next four games are against the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, Washington Commanders and New York Giants.
