Lakers Rumors: Anthony Davis Questionable vs. Grizzlies with Heel Injury
Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis might be available to play Wednesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies despite aggravating an injury in L.A.'s 115-103 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
The Lakers are officially listing him as questionable with what was called a left heel contusion, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
McMenamin provided an earlier update on the big man, saying Davis wasn't ruled out despite what was initially called a foot issue.
"However, those sources cautioned, with the foot issue plaguing the All-Star big man from the end of last season through the Paris Olympics, it will be a day-to-day situation," McMenamin reported.
Davis had 37 points, nine rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes on the floor Monday night.
He was visibly favoring his left foot midway through the fourth quarter, and Lakers trainers briefly tended to him on the court during a timeout. He still stayed in the game and finished out the defeat.
"l'll talk to my trainer and just kind of figure out what exactly is going on," Davis told reporters in the locker room. "I've been managing it since this summer, honestly, and my goal for every game is to be on the floor. And I just kind of landed directly on the spot that's been killing me. So, we'll figure it out."
Even though the 2024-25 season is still young, an injury to the 31-year-old is poorly timed because he's playing some of the best basketball of his career. Through seven games, he's averaging 32.6 points on 57.1 percent shooting along with 11.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.
From the moment he came aboard, first-year head coach JJ Redick emphasized the need to get Davis more involved on offense, and he has done just that. The foot injury risks canceling out some of that progress.
The Lakers, meanwhile, have cooled off after their 3-0 start. They've dropped three of their last four, a run that has renewed the general concerns over whether they have the depth to truly be a championship contender in the Western Conference.
Davis' injury specifically magnifies the risk in Los Angeles hedging so much of its playoff chances on a player who has struggled to stay healthy in the past.
