Patriots' Drake Maye Says He Made 'Dumb Decision' on INT in OT Loss to Titans

After New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye threw a game-tying touchdown pass to send the team into overtime against the Tennessee Titans, he followed up with a game-sealing interception during extra time.

He admitted afterward that it wasn't a smart decision.

"We were throwing into the wind and I have to put more on it. Just a dumb decision. Something you'd like to have back," Maye said according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "Especially in that situation -- we could at least tie it up. Sometimes the best play is to throw it away."

Prior to the interception, the 22-year-old had a solid game, completing 70.7 percent of his passes for 206 yards and one touchdown. However, the interception was the final play of a 20-17 overtime loss.

Maye's go-to tight end, Hunter Henry, weighed in, praising the young quarterback for his impressive performance and dedication.

"The guy's special, man. The way he competes, the way he plays, the way he continues to fight," Henry said. "I'm proud of his fight. There is a lot to learn and we're going to continue to build."

Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, has been receiving praise from fans and teammates despite the Patriots' lackluster season, boasting a 65.6 percent completion rate with 770 total yards and six touchdowns.

Additionally, head coach Jerod Mayo expressed full support for Maye, praising his exceptional talent for his age after the game's conclusion.

"He's a guy out there trying to make a play. I think sometimes as well as he has played, we forget how young he is," Mayo said, per Reiss. "He's going to continue to develop, and he'll be a good quarterback in this league. We'll all learn from this, myself included."

New England will look to bounce back next Sunday on the road against the 4-3 Bears.
