Jalen Hurts' Contract Doesn't Have Golf Clause; Eagles QB Is Honoring Owner's Request

Zach BacharNov 1, 2024

Jalen Hurts' contract with the Philadelphia Eagles doesn't explicitly prevent him from playing golf after all, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Per McLane, Hurts has chosen not to play golf to honor a verbal request from Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

The quarterback previously told reporters on Wednesday that he didn't participate in a round of golf with Lurie, Saquon Barkley and former president Barack Obama due to his contract with the team.

While the request may be unique considering other star quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen have been seen enjoying time on the course, it doesn't appear to be the result of a serious disagreement between Hurts and Lurie regarding his activities off the field.

"I was told not to golf by Mr. Lurie—funny story, I'll tell you another day," Hurts told reporters on Aug. 7, revealing that he picked up tennis over the summer.

When his previous comments were brought up during a press conference on Wednesday, Hurts explained that it's still "not the time to tell the story."

The 26-year-old signed a massive five-year, $255 million extension with Philadelphia during the 2023 offseason that included $179.3 million guaranteed.

While the Eagles traded wins and losses in the first four weeks of the season, they've started to find some consistency and are currently in the midst of a three-game win streak. Hurts' individual play has mirrored the team's improvements, throwing four interceptions in his first three starts of the year compared to zero in his next four appearances.

On the season as a whole, he's completing 69.1 percent of his throws for 1,544 yards and eight touchdowns. Hurts has also remained effective as a dual-threat option, rushing for 255 yards and seven more scores.

He'll look to extend Philadelphia's win streak during a matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
