Prediction
For the first time since 2021 and their victory over Auburn, Penn State hosts College Gameday for a showdown with a Buckeyes team that holds a commanding 23-8 record against the Nittany Lions in their all-time series.
With that said, Ohio State is only 9-6 away from against their conference rivals.
Penn State is one of eight remaining unbeaten teams in the country while their opponents are a one-point loss to Oregon away from joining them.
Neither head coach James Franklin nor Ryan Day is good against top-ranked opposition, with both sporting losing records against top-five teams. Franklin may be forced to reverse that trend without his starting quarterback, Drew Allar, who suffered a knee injury in Week 9 against Wisconsin.
Since 2023, he has been the Big Ten leader in passing yards (4,271) and touchdowns (37) and the driving force behind the school's offense. However, the idea of starting a backup in Beau Pribula against an excellent Ohio State defense is not particularly appealing for the home team, no matter how admirably Pribula played in the second half of the Wisconsin game.
The Buckeyes are not without their injuries. Their offensive line is decimated following an injury to left tackle Josh Simmons against Oregon a few weeks back. Add to that his replacement, Zach Michalski, going down against Nebraska a week ago, and you have an area of the team that can be targeted by a Penn State pass rush that can make life miserable for quarterback Will Howard.
Defense is almost always the difference and should be here.
The uncertainty surrounding Allar and whether he plays, coupled with an Ohio State defense that is tough normally, let alone against a hobbled quarterback or backup, makes it difficult to imagine Franklin finally getting that standout and defining victory Saturday.
Ohio State, with a better quarterback and stingier defense, wins this one by a narrow margin.
Prediction: Ohio State, 34-31
