NFL Rumors: Jeffery Simmons Trade Not in Titans' Plans amid Deandre Hopkins Deal

Joseph ZuckerOct 23, 2024

While the Tennessee Titans have become a seller ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline, they aren't trying to trade defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, according to Buck Reising of A to Z Sports Nashville.

The Titans have been busy Wednesday.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported they're sending wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional fifth-round pick. Then, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Tennessee is getting linebacker Jerome Baker and a fourth-rounder in return for linebacker Ernest Jones IV.

More than anything, the team's stance on Simmons might reflect where his market currently stands.

The 27-year-old carries the seventh-biggest average salary ($23.5 million) for an interior defender and he's not providing that kind of value on the field right now. Having missed the Pro Bowl in 2023, he's on pace to make it two years in a row based on his production so far. Through five games, he has 17 tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss.

Simmons is also signed through the 2027 season, so any team trading for him would be absorbing a big financial cost.

Tennessee could presumably find a taker if it wanted to get out from under his contract. There's plenty of upside with a player who had 16 combined sacks between 2021 and 2022, and a change of scenery might make him more motivated.

Because his trade value is probably as low as it's ever been, this isn't a good time for the Titans to deal him, though. Simmons isn't the kind of player for whom the franchise should accept whatever is on the table.

If a worthwhile offer materializes, Tennessee at least broadly seems motivated to sell. But that kind of proposal probably isn't happening thanks to Simmons' performance.
