Mavs Rumors: Jaden Hardy Agrees to $18M Contact Extension; No Deal for Quentin Grimes
The Dallas Mavericks reportedly signed third-year guard Jaden Hardey to a three-year, $18 million rookie-scale extension, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
However, the team was not able to agree on a rookie-scale deal with Quentin Grimes, according to Fred Katz of The Athletic, meaning he will be a restricted free agent following the 2024-25 season.
Hardy, 22, was a second-round pick of the Mavericks in the 2022 NBA draft and has emerged as a solid role player for the team, averaging 7.9 points while shooting 37.9 percent from three in 121 career contests (12 starts).
Grimes, 24, was an offseason acquisition, coming to Dallas from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks. That move that allowed the Mavs to use their non-taxpayer midlevel exception to sign Naji Marshall to a three-years, $27 million deal, a necessity after Derrick Jones Jr. signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Those were among a number of moves geared toward retooling the roster around Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, which also included adding Klay Thompson in a sign-and-trade and Spencer Dinwiddie in free agency.
The duo of Dinwiddie and Hardy are expected to serve as the second-team backcourt, while Marshall and Grimes will be among the players expected to fill in for the departed Jones.
Grimes had a career year in the 2022-23 season with the New York Knicks as the primary backcourt mate for Jalen Brunson, averaging 11.3 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 38.6 percent from three.
His role in New York was reduced last season, however, and he was part of the trade package sent to the Pistons for Bojan Bogdanović and Alec Burks in February. He'll have a chance to earn a bigger role in Dallas this season, and in the process up his market as a restricted free agent.
