NFL Insider: Woody Johnson Has Been Criticized as 'Really Bad' by Owners, Ex-Jets
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has been scrutinized for his rash decision to fire former head coach Robert Saleh last week, but many around the league reportedly have been criticizing him for years.
During an appearance on Scoop City, Mike Silver of The Athletic revealed that Johnson is not viewed favorably in league circles for his management of the Jets since becoming the team's owner in 2000.
"I admire his intentions, but I just think he's really bad at running an NFL team," Silver said around the 4:30 mark. "Actually, I don't think so, I know, and that's been proven over time. ... I used to rank owners every year... I was pretty brutal, and this is not just me saying that, this is people who have worked with him, this is other owners."

Johnson chose to fire Saleh following a 2-3 start to the season that included a disappointing loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, where Johnson had served as ambassador for four years. Silver called the decision to let Saleh go "a little impetuous and on-brand for Woody." He also pointed out the 77-year-old's apparent impulsive leadership style.
"It's not just that the Jets haven't won, but they haven't stuck to plans," Silver said. "He seems to govern based on what he sees on social media, which way the wind's blowing, who the last person he talked to is."
After firing Saleh, the Jets lost their first game under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Monday night against the Buffalo Bills. New York acquired star receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders the very next day.
It remains to be seen if any of these moves will pay off, but the Jets (2-4) will be trying to stop a three-game losing streak when they meet the Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) on Sunday Night Football.
