NFL Rumors: Giants OT Andrew Thomas Expected to Be Out for Season with Foot Injury

Timothy RappOct 15, 2024

New York Giants offensive tackle Andrew Thomas is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season after having surgery to address a Lisfranc injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The offensive tackle suffered the injury during the third quarter of Sunday night's 17-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rapoport reported on Tuesday that Thomas was meeting with
"noted foot expert" Dr. Robert Anderson and "his status for the season is now considered to be up in the air," with any surgery likely to end his 2024 campaign.

"Something's sore, I don't know exactly what it is," Thomas told reporters after the game regarding his foot, adding that he underwent an X-ray and was told he would need further imaging to discern "exactly what's going on."

His loss is massive for a Giants team already trying to recover from a 2-4 start to the season. The Giants are scoring just 16 points per game, 29th in the NFL, while averaging 319.3 yards per contest (20th).

The team was already without standout rookie Malik Nabers and starting running back Devin Singletary in Week 6, and Thomas is among the most important players on the team, protecting Daniel Jones' blind side from the left tackle position. While he hasn't been elite in 2024, giving up four sacks, he remains New York's best offensive lineman.

With Thomas expected to sit for the remainder of the year, the immediate backup plan for the Giants would likely be to flip right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor to the left side and start Evan Neal at right tackle. The other option would be to keep Eluemunor in place and start Josh Ezeudu on the left side.

Neither option is ideal. Ezeudu was rough in relief duty of Thomas last season, while shifting Eluemunor to the right side and bringing in Neal—who has been a bust to this point in his career after being the seventh overall pick in the 2022 draft—would weaken both tackle positions.

The Giants could also seek to bolster the position in a trade, though teams are generally unwilling to give up starting-level tackles in midseason deals.
