Bill Belichick Rips Jets Owner Woody Johnson for Robert Saleh Firing on 'ManningCast'
Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick joined the mass of critics who believe New York Jets owner Woody Johnson made a premature decision to fire head coach Robert Saleh last week.
"That's kind of what it's been there at the Jets—barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ready, fire, aim," Belichick said during an appearance on the ManningCast broadcast of Monday night's game between the Jets and Buffalo Bills.
Belichick has been one of New York's biggest adversaries in his 23 seasons in New England. While he praised Saleh for what he accomplished before he was fired, he made his disdain for the franchise clear.
"I'm not a big Jets fan, in case you don't know that," Belichick said to Eli and Peyton Manning. "I like Fireman Ed, but that's it. Coach Saleh did a good job with that program. He brought in a culture, a level of toughness and competitiveness. … I thought Coach Saleh really did a good job with this team and they're probably not that far from winning."
In their first game under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich and newly-anointed play-caller Todd Downing following Nathaniel Hackett's demotion, the Jets suffered a 23-20 loss that featured some of the same issues they experienced under Saleh.
The team was called for 11 penalties and went 1-of-4 on red-zone opportunities. Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein missed two field goals, while star quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a game-sealing interception for the second straight week as New York's losing streak extended to three straight games.
While Belichick is not alone in his criticism of the Jets, it should be noted that he was head coach of the team for one day before bolting to take the Patriots job, which he poked fun at while speaking to the Manning brothers.
"I was the head coach before [Bill Parcells] came there and I was the head coach after Bill resigned. Undefeated, unscored on, alright?" Belichick said. "My career as the coach of the Jets, it is unblemished. Never gave up a point."
