Cowboys' Jerry Jones 'Not Ready' to Discuss Roster, Coaching Changes After Lions Loss

Timothy RappOct 13, 2024

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wasn't in the mood to discuss any potential roster or coaching changes following Sunday's 47-9 blowout loss against the Detroit Lions.

"I'm not ready to talk about changes right now," he told reporters following the loss.

He added that he was "not considering" a coaching change.

Maybe he should be. Mike McCarthy's Cowboys are now just 3-3 on the season and have lost their last four games at home dating back to last season's playoffs.

In three of those games, the Cowboys gave up over 40 points. But none were more comprehensive meltdowns than Sunday's uninspiring effort.

The Cowboys were out-gained by the Lions, 492-251. Dallas had a whopping five turnovers; Detroit had none. The Lions won the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 34 minutes and 43 seconds. And perhaps worst of all, the Lions tossed a bunch of gadget plays and weird alignments at Dallas, the football equivalent of playing with their food.

Not quite the way Jones would have wanted to celebrate his 82nd birthday.

"I think it was the just the feeling of the team having fun at our expense, Detroit having fun at our expense," he told reporters about taking such a massive loss on his birthday.

"We're disappointed that we're 3-3... I don't necessarily totally blame it on McCarthy," he added. "The players will tell you they had something to do with it, too. His other part of the staff will tell you, and the owner sure will tell you he had something to do with it."

There will be plenty of blame to go around. What's clear is that the Cowboys have some serious soul-searching to do as they head into their bye week. The schedule doesn't get much easier after that, with matchups against the San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans and Washington Commanders looming immediately after the bye.

Whether there will be comprehensive changes to the Cowboys before they run that gauntlet remains to be seen.
