Report: FSU's DJ Uiagalelei Could Miss Rest of Season After Surgery on Hand Injury
Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei could potentially miss the remainder of the 2024 season after undergoing surgery on his throwing hand, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz (h/t Pete Nakos of On3.com).
Uiagalelei suffered the hand injury in the fourth quarter of the Seminoles' 42-16 loss to SMU on Sept. 28, causing him to leave the game.
He'll be replaced by backup Brock Glenn under center during Florida State's clash with No. 15 Clemson on Saturday.
Glenn briefly replaced Uiagalelei for two drives against SMU, failing to complete all four of his pass attempts.
Even before the injury to the team's starting signal-caller, it's been a disastrous year for the Seminoles. After opening the season at No. 10 in the Week 1 Associated Press Top 25 poll, Florida State lost each of its first three contests.
Head coach Mike Norvell's team was able to defeat Cal in Week 4, but the success was short-lived as the blowout loss to the Mustangs occurred the following week. The Seminoles currently sit at 1-4.
Uiagalelei has been partially responsible for the team's slow start, as he's struggled with turnovers. After tossing seven interceptions in 12 games during his 2023 campaign at Oregon State, he had already been picked off six times in five games to start the 2024 season.
He also completed 53.8 percent of his throws for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns.
Due to the injury, Uiagalelei could attempt to secure a medical redshirt and return to college football in 2025 for his sixth season (via Nakos). That would require him to sit out for the rest of the year.
In the meantime, Glenn will attempt to help the Seminoles secure an upset victory on Saturday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET.
