Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: 'I Felt Like S--t' When I Saw Video of Rashee Rice Injury

Paul KasabianOct 3, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters that he "felt like s--t" after watching a replay of the moment where he accidentally hit teammate Rashee Rice's knee while they were trying to chase down Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton following an interception last Sunday.

"When I saw the replay, I felt like s--- that I hit Rashee,'' Mahomes said Thursday, per ESPN's Adam Teicher. "I wasn't really worried about myself. I was worried about his injury and hopefully that it wasn't as bad as it looked. I was the one that hit him.

"I didn't notice it in the moment. I was more worried about trying to get the ball. Obviously, he's just trying to make a play, and it happens whenever you're trying to make tackles.''

Obviously, Mahomes isn't at fault as his intent was to stop Fulton. The injury was ultimately the result of an unfortunate series of events.

As for Rice, the Chiefs placed him on injured reserve Thursday, meaning he'll miss at least four games.

Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride provided an update from the locker room.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also spoke with reporters.

Mahomes wasn't the only high-profile Chiefs player to lament Rice's injury, as tight end Travis Kelce also spoke about how much it hurt seeing his teammate suffer an ailment. He made his remarks on the New Heights podcast (begins at 42:22 mark).

"It's not gonna get any easier with seeing Rashee go down during the game. I just love the way that guy was playing the game of football, how he was attacking every single day in practice. Sometimes you just root so hard for the guys that do it the right way, and Rashee had been doing that, man. It was a huge dagger to me when I saw him go down, man."

Rice was off to a tremendous start, catching 24 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns through three games. He just came off a 12-catch, 110-yard, one-touchdown outing in a 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

But now the Chiefs must find a way to move forward, especially with wide receiver Marquise Brown expected to miss the regular season due to a sternoclavicular injury.

Kelce, who was off to a slow start after three weeks, turned it up against the Chargers with seven catches for 89 yards. He figures to be a focal point moving forward. Rookie Xavier Worthy, who had three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, may see more work.

No other Chiefs wideouts besides Rice and Worthy have amassed more than eight targets (two/per game on average), but that figures to change. Justin Watson and JuJu Smith-Schuster were notably second and third in snaps, respectively, among wideouts against the Bolts.

Kansas City will look to move to 5-0 on Monday at home when the team welcomes the New Orleans Saints into town.
