Jimmy Butler: Need to Show I'm Major Part of Winning After Lack of New Heat Contract

Scott PolacekSep 30, 2024

Jimmy Butler's long-term future with the Miami Heat is still a question mark after not receiving a new contract this offseason with a 2025-26 player option looming, and he addressed the situation Monday.

"I've gotta prove that I'm a major part of winning, and rightfully so," he told reporters when discussing not receiving a new contract. "I've done it before, this is no different. This is going to be a great year for myself, it's going to be a great year for the group of guys that we have. That'll take care of itself whenever the time comes."

It seemed like there might be some tension between the Heat and Butler at one point this offseason.

The six-time All-Star missed Miami's first-round playoff loss to the Boston Celtics because of a sprained MCL in his right knee, but that didn't stop him from saying the eventual champions and New York Knicks would not have advanced if he was playing.

As Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald noted, Heat president Pat Riley addressed those comments in May and said, "I thought, is that Jimmy trolling or is that Jimmy serious? If you're not on the court playing against Boston or on the court playing against the New York Knicks, you should keep your mouth shut in your criticism of those teams."

Riley also suggested giving Butler an extension would be "a big decision on our part to commit those kinds of resources unless you're somebody who's really going to be there, available every single night."

The last time Butler played more than 65 games was the 2016-17 season when he was still on the Chicago Bulls. His absence in the playoffs also prevented Miami from seriously challenging the Celtics and may have played a role in the team's decision to remain noncommittal on a contract extension.

Jackson reported that Butler went into the offseason hoping to land an extension that would turn his contract into a three-year one worth $161.7 million instead of the two-year one worth $10.2 million with the player option.

For his part, Butler said he can "see what he's talking about" when discussing Riley's availability comment and downplayed the idea that there is any lingering tension.

"Not too many things bother me nowadays," Butler said Monday. "I'm happy. I'm healthy. I've got a beautiful family. And I get to hoop. Not too much in the media is ever going to get to me."

A healthy Butler is Miami's best chance to compete with the Celtics, Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers and others in the Eastern Conference. He helped lead the franchise to the NBA Finals in 2020 and 2023, as well as an Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 2022.

The contract situation could be an additional motivator this season, which would be beneficial to both the player and team. If that's the case, there may be an extension waiting for him next offseason.
