Lakers' LeBron James Shuts Down Concerns After Playing in Olympics Ahead of 22nd Year
LeBron James is 39 years old and will turn 40 in December. He's also coming off a summer that saw him play a prominent role in Team USA's gold-medal performance in the men's basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics, increasing his summer workload.
But despite those factors, James isn't worried about his body breaking down anytime soon, and actually feels as though the Summer Games put him ahead of schedule in his offseason preparations.
"I do have a lot in the tank," he told reporters Monday. "A lot."
James added that he isn't contemplating his future plans beyond this upcoming season just yet.
"Have not thought about what the future holds," he told reporters. "Just kind of living in the moment. Especially with Bronny being here, I don't want to take this moment for granted. This is a moment I'll enjoy maybe a little bit more."
James certainly didn't look like a player who was over the hill last season, averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game, shooting 54 percent from the field and 41 percent from three.
He was also named the MVP of the men's basketball tournament in Paris after posting 14.2 points, 8.5 assists and 6.8 rebounds per contest for Team USA while collecting his third Olympics gold medal.
The Lakers had a quiet offseason, keeping essentially the same core around the star duo of James and Anthony Davis. Granted, it's possible that the Lakers could shake things up as the season progresses—general manager Rob Pelinka has said the team would take around 30 games to evaluate where they stand and could make upgrades from there.
"We would do a trade with both picks if that leads to sustainable Lakers excellence," general manager Rob Pelinka he told reporters last week regarding the 2029 and 2031 first-round picks the team currently can trade. "We would also use one pick to make a marginal upgrade if we felt that was the right thing to do."
But for now, the Lakers will go as far as James and AD can take them. And James sounds physically prepared to withstand another heavy burden.
